So my old dear is in her 60's, she gets a letter last week...speeding ticket.....she now has 9 points for speeding!!!! As far as I'm aware, her in built car sat nav will only advise of static cameras and may advise of where a mobile camera has been located in the past, it will not advise of where a current mobile camera is. Am I correct in thinking you can buy all singing all dancing detectors that advise of all camera positions, fixed and more importantly mobile? I seem to remember one called the ' snooper' or something similar. If anybody can recommend one, would be greatly appreciated. Cheers All.
Best database is Pocket GPS World which you can put on the likes of Garmin and TomTom, as well as having an app for android. They currently have an iphone app as well but they are having problems with Apple wanting to remove it. I have used Inforad, Snooper, TomTom and Garmin in the past but now I just use the app above The database is subscription based and costs about £19 per year.
Road angel gem. Does the lot. About 130 quid wen i bought mine i think. Halfords have always got them in
You are right. That´s reminds me on my Radar Detector which I put somewhere in the boot from my car and forgot about it. I know that I spend over 250 GBP for it when I bought it years ago, but I dont use it now. It worked pretty well. I think the best bet is for your mother to really just be more aware of the speed limits on the roads. I get weekly emails about local speed camera point but will never remember all of them Speed camera detector or not the best bet to to be aware of the speed limits and that most of these are in 30MPH Areas. Majority anywho
Collecting points like that for speeding, really needs to re evaluate driving technique. A camera detector will just be relied on and it's unlikely to stop many handhelds and mobile systems unless she is totally focused and concentrating, which is possibly where the root cause of the problem is.
Remal, wouldnt that be a good idea for the forum? Create a page updated regularly by riders that know of speed camera sites or hotspots.
it was done a while ago and "unmarked cars thread" with ideas on cars, makes where they had been seen etc... but after a while it dies off
Round here they have big signs with the limit written on them in big numbers, I thought everywhere had them? Or get one these for her, Axiam, tops out at 55mph
I agree that many mobile camera are revenue generating however many are put in places where there are high instances of accidents. Also these should allow for a good percentage over the limit.(10% + 2mph) Im no angel but pick and choose where I decide to speed and alway looking out for white vans parked at the side of the road or high vis vests lurking in bushes. My old man drives like Mansel and only collected 3 points in 40 years of driving. Does your mum drive an auto?, I find it is very easy to exceed the lower limits in them, for me manuals are easier to abide to limits, staying in gear gives you more feedback on speed without having to refer to the speedo. IMO radar detectors are a bit of a waste of money in a car, by the time it detects anything its too late.
I'd let her get banned if she were my Mum, at least it would avoid her maybe killing some child in a 30 limit and all the trauma on both sides that goes with it. Not critising but why would she take any more notice of a Speed Trap thingy beeping or flashing any more than the Speedo she already has?
To be honest, it's all for doing 34 in a 30, or 36 in a 30, so not really "speeding" as such. Yes, she drives an auto, Volvo v40 d4, probably doesn't help. But I would have to agree with remal, kentblade.......seems to spend most of her time gassing and looking out the window.
Ahhh V40, my wife has a V60 its as quiet and comfy as a private members clubs sun lounge, no wonder she is creeping over the limit, that's why they fit a million safety aids to them, to protect the driver, no one else.
