I serviced my 2010 at the weekend and wanted to do a coolant change too but it's something I've never tackled before so I stopped at the oil and filter. Could anyone give me either a step by step guide to how to drain and renew the coolant please? Or perhaps a link to another thread where it has been explained before? Like most things in a service, I'm sure it's a piece of ****, just need to do it once - so if anyone can help I'd be extremely grateful!
Hmmm I hadn't given that one any thought tbh! Was planning on paying the local Honda dealer a visit and then buy whatever they recommended over the counter. Would you recommend and particular one then?
On a rr7 it is: Remove rh fairing to get to rad cap. Remove rad cap. Undo drain plug bolt on water pump. If not putting a flush in then put the bolt back. Remove pipe from bottom of expansion tank and drain. Refit expansion tank pipe. Fill rad up to bottom of cap hole and expansion tank Run engine and blip throttle a couple of times to 3-4000 rpm. Engine off. Top up if necessary. Rad cap back on. Run engine until up to temp and fan kicks in. Engine off and allow to cool. Rad cap off carefully. Top up if necessary. Repeat if necessary.
Cool engine. Tray under drain bolt, undo drain bolt, remove radiator cap, drain, squeeze hoses helps purge as much coolant as possible. Empty expansion tank. Replace drain bolt and washer, new washer if you are really keen, never bothered myself. Refill radiator via cap neck slowly, allow air to purge as you fill, squeeze hoses again to purge as much air as poss. Fill to base of rad cap neck. Start engine, without rad cap on, idle a bit, then blip throttle a few times to about 5k, this helps get air out of system. Stop engine. If the level has dropped, top up to base of filler neck and replace cap. Top up expansion tank to upper level line. Refit cap. Restart engine and allow to reach normal temp and the thermomstat opens. Shut down engine. Let engine go cool, remove rad. cap, make sure level is still at base of neck, if not top up, refit cap. Check expansion tank level is at upper level. Job done. EDIT Beat me!
Givover/Barstewardsquad/Kentblade - I can't thank you chaps enough for your help with this. I really appreciate it! Going to give it a go at the weekend and will follow the steps. Great knowing there's this kind of support out there on this forum and look forward to the day I can return the favour! Will let you know how I get on. All the best fellas!
Hi Gums! Chemical? No I haven't, in fact I thought it was all distilled water based. Do you, or anyone else out there, use the chemical coolant then?
This might help Flush the Cooling System on a Honda CBR-1000RR - Russell Brooks I'm thinking Motul Motocool as coolant, need something that need help the blade run cooler in the summer.
Thanks for the Evans Coolant link Lambchop, was really interested until I saw to the price of it. Jeez! It's like liquid gold! But I do understand the reason, if it goes in it stays in and more cost effective in long run etc etc . Think I'll stick with the traditional stuff so thanks for the Motul suggestion Slick, I'll invest in a few litres to keep her running nice and cool. Thanks again for the steer.
