Hi guys, I need a bit of advice. I've been offered a set of Supercorsers (2 rear and one front) fitted for £160 (they throw in a second rear). They have been raced but I've been assured that they've done no more than 15 laps (he actually thought that they'd covered 10 or so but didn't want to understate how much track time they've had). They will be supplied and fitted by the garage where I get my MOT's done as they have a race team too. So the question is - would you guys go for this? I'm really tempted as I was going to get a new set of Pilot Road 4's, but for half the price I can get these used beauties. He told me that loads of customers buy them regularly. So what's the general consensus?
Are they for road or track? Also what compound are they? If they are the popular combo of SC1 front and SC2 rear they won't last five minutes on the road!!
They are for the road, but I've no idea about the compound. Don't know a great deal about tyres so didn't realise it was something I should ask. He said that I'd easily get a few thousand miles out of them. What are the compound choices so that I can ask when I speak to him again? What's the preferred option?
I know many who use part worns for road and track. I've only had them for track and have no issues if you know they have been stored and looked after in getting more
Does anyone here use them already? They look like they may struggle in the wet, and knowing our inclement weather there is more than a passing chance that I could be caught out in the rain. Reading around people say that they can struggle in the wet (and if you've read my other posts you'll see that I'm a little bit of a nervous wet rider). I may go for the PR3 or 4 even though they are twice the price. Decisions decisions....
Good tyres but id never pay more than £60 for race scrubs. 10/15 laps at what circuit and what level rider? Bit of a difference between a novice/inter around a short track or a club racer/pro on a long track (where they'd prob be fit for the bin!)
You will be lucky to get 2k miles from Supercorsa's, and they are not great in the wet, but will get more than double that from Pilot 3/4 and they will work much better in the wet. If you know what you are getting into scrubs can be great.
(Sorry if this is a double post -my PC just hiccuped and I'm not sure where the original went) I'm starting to talk myself out of the race tyres. Another (and very important) point is that I want to get rid of the chicken strips off my own tyres, not have someone else do it for me - that's just cheating!! They quoted me 290 for the PR4s with fitting which was 30 cheaper than somewhere else. More investigation needed....
I used race scrubs on my old bike and will do again on my new bike when I get it, why not? If they're good enough for someone a lot better than me to tank around a track at 180mph, they'll be fine for me to trundle around Wales on. And It cost me £80 for 4mm instead of £250 for 4.5mm. Andy B
I have used part worn supercorsas on a zx6r I used to have,they were a good tyre,don't ride in the wet so can't vouch for their performance on wet roads,but they were good value.There are loads for sale on ebay,though mostly 180/55's so no good for a blade
I have bought ex track tyres in the past, some were great, nearly as new, but some are blue'd with the heat and they had a weird profile.
To add to the poll - Mrs Stu has just cast the deciding vote after looking at the posts. It went something along the lines of 'Don't buy the second hand ones if they are slippy in the wet and don't last'. Looks like I'll be coughing up for some PR4s, which I'm more than happy to do. Thanks for the poll answers and posts. As always you guys have helped to steer my boat of uncertainty down the river of confusion to land on the beach of resolution. I'll let you know how I get on and what my thoughts are on the PR4s when I get them fitted. Time for a cuppa I think.
Used loads of scrubs on track and on road. Got more miles out of them than expected as well. Would do it if were me
I sell all my race scrubs, previously a lot of Pirelli supercorsas (version ones), and last couple of years Metzeler racetec interacts, always SC1/K1 (soft) front and SC2/K2 (med) rear. Usually they have done a weekends racing, 8-10 laps qualifying then 4x 10 lap sprint races, so about 60miles from brand new. Pay aprox £300 a set and get £80 back for them. If you do track days or only take your bike out on a sunny Sunday then they will be fine, if you ride in the wet they will be rubbish. Remember to get the right pressure info for the tyres not what Honda recommend for your bike with hard road tyres on.
£160 doesn't seem too bad if the rears are sc2. A pair will last all summer and makes it £40 for the front (which will out last the rears) if you consider the rears as £60 each. Obviously PR's will out last these, but the SC's do offer more grip when when warm and dry. I have a mixture of scrubs in my garage, but also have PR4's on my blade. My plan is to sell or use up my scrubs in summer, and then stick to the PR's (yes i'm a convert)
You say you are a nervous wet rider so I would say avoid the supercorsas as they aren't good in the wet. Pr 3's and 4's are good in both and think you would only really feel the dry benefits of supercorsas if you were running fast in the quick group on tracks. The Pr's will install confidence in normal road and medium track use and confidence is most of the game
