A couple of weeks ago my son had his TS50 Moped stolen from outside his climbing club. It had been chained. Well the Police found it within 12 hrs, in an unconnected raid. The Police got a recovery company to take and store it so forensics could use it. two weeks later we were told to collect it. there's a £150.00p fee plus if you don't collect today an extra £10.00p a day charge. This can't be correct He's a Victim of crime! .... Has anyone had this before. does it happen if you have your TV stolen .... It's recovered and you have to pay!
    Mike.

These days it is a police service, and you have to pay for services. Sadly it is true that you will have to pay, would try to reclaim it on the insurance if you are putting a claim in.

did you give the police authority to keep the bike ? if not why did they not give you the chance to remove it from the storage facility , did they tell you there was a storage fee before they put it there ?

No didn't know they had it till they said it had been recovered. ... couldn't remove it till they used it for forensics. No didn't say about fee until I arrived at storage place.

I think what normally happens is the insurance pays.

Unfortunately it's the keeper who has to pay the storage and recovery fees, most folks claim through insurance.
What made me mad was a mate of mine was killed on his bike, his wife got the recovery and storage charges a month later which totalled £350!

our lass had a car stolen and recovered ,the police asked us if we wanted it to be fingerprinted for forensics ,we said yes until we found out we would be charged for it.
as you say the police assume that you will be claiming and the insurance would normally pay up.
it is your bike so in my eyes they should have given it back to you asap.

On a side note, how much is insurance for a Ped for your average 16 year old?

They kept it for their separate investigation nothing to do with your case, as far as I'm concerned I wouldn't pay a penny as they gave you no option.

    Ours was about £300 TPF&T at 16. Now it's £1200 on a Ford KA at 17

I agree. As wrong as the system sounds and the fact that the Police seem to hold the bike to ransom, there is a lot of truth in the fact that the Police NEEDED the bike collected for investigation, therefore they should not be passing the bill on. After all, I bet they wouldn't pass on a G4S bill for fingerprinting the criminal would they!!!

The reason I ask is my eldest daughter is 16 this August and I'm debating whether to insure her for her Cousins Ped for a year even though she won't be riding it so I can present the insurance Co with 1 years NCB when she starts driving.

That might save me more than the 'wasted' / 'invested' years Ped insurance?

    Thoughts?

I don't think they will insure without CBT

Is that a 'definate' Mike or a guess from memory?

Surely you would need insurance in place before doing any training, even off road?

Don't take that as correct, but I can remember my son having a drama about getting a CBT before his insurance. But this may have been for a reduced premium. Truth is I can't remember but if you rang your local CBT training guy up I'm sure he'll tell you.
I think if I was taking that course I'd get some firm figures from an insurer first.

    Good Luck,
    Mike.

Often falling down stairs or walking into doors, or worse tripping over a hammer and breaking their kneecaps.
