For s start the ECU is made by Keihin not Mitsubishi.. Id like to know more, maybe call him and ask for some written info re spec etc?
Mate I never claim to know it all, and things are always changing so I find it pays to ask and listen, what I will say is this, if someone fails to fully explain something sometimes its best just to turn and walk away I'd be interested to know how do they interface with the ECU? What software do they use to map it? How fine is the mapping? LOW/MID/HIGH or 10 throttle positions for each 250RPM of the rev range? Can they save the map and load it onto a another ECU in case one was to fail? What about other features can they read/control, fan trips, the HISS security, closed loop lambda etc? Hope that gives you some ideas
Arthur are you asking these questions because you don't believe flash tuning is possible or just that its not possible with the Honda?? I had my bike flash tuned with Mike (new R1), this is his company Home - VeloxRacing - European and UK home of Flash Tune, Flash-tune dealer and Yamaha R1 R6 Performance parts and tuning The main things he did with my bike was to get rid of the heavy engine breaking which he did, increase power which was done, remap it as i had removed my cat and added slip ons which he did, disable the AIS which was done along with many other things. When i first rode my R1 it was like riding a tractor and i was pissed with always having to change the engine mode so sent it off to Mike, when it came back and i tried again i was absolutely gob smacked at the difference, the ride was so smooth and the power just incredible and no more having to change engine modes, turn the key and it was in "A" mode.... Have a quick read of that link mate and see what you think...
I've got all your questions written down Arthur,I will see how it goes,if I don't like what I hear I won't take it any further,is it worth ringing a Honda dealer?A friend of a friend is thinking of...Will have read of your link too Matt.
I know flash tuning works and works very well but with Yamaha's ecu's and don't know of anyone here in the UK that do Honda, i know theres a few companies in the USA that can flash the Blade so i would be skeptical and proceed with caution..... A Honda dealer will know nothing.....
No Matt I know of most that are on the market, the systems and software just not much on Honda OEM ECU UK Flashings capabilities. So as I say always open minded about new software and services etc, pays to ask the questions and know the market, helps me to help others and expand my knowledge of such systems, however sometimes when I poke my nose in some take offence and are often rude etc, understandable when you ask so many questions like me...lol or exposes that the sellers knowledge is weak or a case of bullshit baffles brains lol I have hands on experience with many, Bazzaz, DynoJet, Tuneboy and a few others, even some Motech and Nemesis etc. It would be good if in this case the shop etc can expand on the possibilities etc, after all they are the ones who will benefit from it. Oh and I am a dealer for DynoJet UK
Totally agree mate, ive looked high and low for a flash tuner for Honda and don't believe they exist, i spoke to Mike who owns that company in the link and he knows just about all those in that business and he doesn't believe they can be flashed so i too like you would be interested in seeing if this guy is full off it...
Defo! Same as mate, sometimes depending on software etc depends on how much of an advantage mapping the ECU offers, if the tuning points are not that fine it could only offer limited mapping hence why I ask, and let's face it if your mapping them then you will have the answers? right? As shown in your mates web site most ECU mapping is very bike specific, the factors are down to one: being able to talk to the ECU and two: being able to identify and re write the code that defines the fuel and air etc. I know people who map Ducati ECUs but only two people in the UK that I know of, one I know by name, the other no one knows who they are, top secret! also no one knows what software etc the second person uses...dark art! The first chap can read the raw code! not an easy task as the raw code is just that, raw data, seeing anything that looks like fuel trims is near impossible! Your mates software will convert that code into a legible form that he can identify and map, then store that map in the ECU, known as flashing (for those who don't) hence why the service is highly specific as each model is very different and unless the company who writes the software has studied and cracked the ECUs they will not be included in the software, then you also need a cable and method of communicating to the ECU, another problem for the software company that provides the dyno centre with the tool to map the ECUs... it's a long and complex subject very much simplified by the likes of DynoJet. This is why I say that a PCV is a great way of mapping an ECU, not only do most dyno centres map them but even Joe public can load the software and read, edit and save the maps with a simple PC and USB cable.. Some car mappers even lock the ECU so only they can re map or edit the data etc, just to shaft any one else from looking at the maps etc, how do you even know it's been mapped? trust? Anyway I hope the guy in question does come good, be interesting to read the facts of what's what...
With all this chat about ecu flashing etc and yamaha being the main one for it it's puzzling me how good it really is. There's been a lot of protest this year because of the road racing regs (particulay the factory yamaha Milwaukee) about rules etc. Shaun muier threatened to pull his team out because the regs wouldn't allow them to run motec on their bikes .. They said without this they wouldn't be able to compete at a decent enough level and would have a major dissadvantage. Yams kit loom and kit ecu is no where near as good as say Hrc kit gear so the yams run motec.. Yam are competing at tt etc without motec anyway but it makes me think if the ecu reflashing is that good they wouldn't need to spend the 30k on to kit the bikes out with motec etc.. Powercommader all the way for the easiest, cheapest way of refuelling . I Kniw the motec acts like traction control on the r1 and no one else is allowed it but I'm puzzled .. Giad to see they are entering anyway . Honda have it right . More power doesn't mean more speed. It's all about total control and being able to manage the power sbd get it down better and make it more usable
The big difference with race ecu's n looms is they can set and adjust so much more inside the race ECU than stock. Race ecu's are also normally running faster processors as well as more memory, just like any computer the faster and more resources it has the more capable the system is! OEM ecu's are built on a budget and the manufacturer only needs to spend the money on building a unit that's capable for the needs of there road goin vehicle. Why would any manufacturer spend extra money to fit an ECU which is capable of features that will never be used on 99.9% of there road bikes?
Full fat race ECUs are highly complex as you all say, they also start life fairly blank! Takes a fair amount of programming etc to create ignition and fuel maps based on engine speed, wheel speed, gear position, engine temp, air temp, air presure, lambda data and much more, massive task! Massive amount of data that all needs to be setup based on the best understanding of the configuration of the engine and bike in question. I know a few small teams who spent a year or more with experts from big WSB teams helping on a few days just to get to grips with it, and that's with the big wig WSB teams experts helping out! Just timing the ignition for a four cylinder engine is one mission then you have injection pulse timings too, for the whole rev range...good luck with that...
A lot of ECU tuning depends on the knowledge and skills of the tuner. Find a reputable one with good review. I had mine tuned and could not be happier.
Your quite right what you say about muir racing but did you know the governing body at the tt have anything goes this year ,reason being it is to hard to watch over and control it ,
Hilltop motorcycle outside Leicester. Geof is highly regarded in the world of BMW and he tunes for several BSB teams as well.
new world, these are the guys I am on about, tried ringing Geoff today but he's not in til tomorrow, can you go into details of the differences it made from stock? Cheers, BJ
I see ECUunleased has a YouTube add on the blade they also have a website but when you look for info on the blade there are no Hondas, also it implies that the ECU map is a flash (pre written upgrade of firmware), rather than a custom map? I'm surprised with so many blades around it's not more commonly talked about? In case I am out of touch (sure I am) was chatting to a couple of mates who run dyno shops etc and we are all keen to see and hear about the results of this thread, did try and call the number today to talk to someone, had a odd chat but no one was around to answer any questions.
Just out of curiosity do you know what changes where made to your ecu?? My R1 needed changes to the engine breaking, power delivery, restrictions taken off, de-cat, engine mode and ais. But when i think about the Blade im not to sure what can be improved, power delivery seems nice and smooth, very little engine breaking which i find perfect, theres no engine/riding modes so all i could really think of is more power if thats possible.... Also im looking at their web site and it say's very little.....
