    Quick question...

What do all you guys use fuel wise? been on a few run with Gilesy lately and he religiously puts super unleaded/vpower/ultimate in his blade. I was advised by the dealer only to put regular unleaded in mine. Anyone been told anything similar??

    Cheers

    Danny

I use super unleaded most of the time but have no issue using regular, I do tend to get a bit more milage out of the super though :)

Same as Jamie mate use the special stuff for a bit better MPG but chuck in unleaded when there is no choice.

Just go read every review you can find on 95 Octane against the Super brews, at the end of the day you are not going to notice diddly squat in the day to day running of your bike.

Well that's not entirely accurate mate. Lots of reviews out there even including fifth gear etc that prove Vpower fuel provides better MPG and power output in both cars and bikes. My bike is also specifically mapped to vpower characteristics as was my turbo'd Audi.

    I certainly notice a difference ;)

Premium fuels show more advantage to sporty engines than eco types which I am guessing helps us on supersports

Subjective maybe, but my turboed Audi, still makes its 320 ponies no matter what I have tried, 95 or V power, still returns the same 22mpg and still appears to have the same shove and for 8p a litre more its hard to see any difference, and lets be honest, if it it gives me an extra 2 or so BHP that ain't going no where in the real world.

I have used both super and regular unleaded but have noticed I get more MPG from Super every time I use it.

as long as you don't run out Super or regular is fine

Plain old regular. Never really tried super etc as I don't need any extra bhp from the bike as I don't use what it already has, and I doubt the extra MPG would cover the extra price. Have always been told that you need a knock sensor to get the benefit from higher octane fuel and am pretty certain my RR7 doesn't have one.

My car gets better MPG, and is slightly more eager on Super... haven't noticed any difference whatsoever in the bike. My previous blade however (an RRY) was like night-and-day... never felt right on standard, felt like a rocket ship with Super in it!

Don't concern yourself overly with Super vs Standard...... just be sure to avoid the Supermarket forecourts as they skimp on the additives that keep our engines in good health!

knowing a guy for years who works on transport for shell. He filled up at the same place and delivers to shell stations and supermarkets. So it''s myth about supermarket vs branded fuel as far as I know

The way it's been explained to me is this... all the base petrol ultimately comes from the same places, out of the same tanks, down the same pipes, etc... (be it Standard, Super, V-Power, Supermarket, whatever).
Then certain brands add "additive packages" either into the tanker, or when emptying into the forecourt tanks... and its these "additive packages" that are the difference between all the brands/makes at the forecourt.

Have heard the same explanation several times from many different sources, including from a guy who worked at the big depot in Avonmouth...... but obviously, could be another internet-perpetuated urban myth... be good to know for sure though.

I started putting super in mine last year and, I don't know if it's Snake Oil psychology, but I feel like the bike pulls smoother on super. No discernible increase in power, just a smoother feeling to the roll on.

Worth the extra pennies, for me at least.

By my reckoning it's about £1.50 extra per full tank for my RR4.

There's FA diff between 95 and 97 RON (Research Octane). The ONLY difference, is the extra additives they put into the 97 to delay pre-ignition from compression. So you can compress 97 MORE than 95 octane before you get knocking.

Aside from the extra additives, the calorific content is identical... The additives BTW, USED to be red lead... When lead was banned (A good thing, especially in densely populated countries like the UK) they starts to use different chemicals. Toluene was popular... IIRC it was blamed for older cars catching on fire in NZ when leaded fuel was banned (Because it rotted the rubber piping used put o the carb... Which then sprayed fuel all over anise hot engine :) ).

You could also use Ethanol IIRC... Has an octane rating of about 110... Calorific value pretty piss poor though... So you can see that RON alone is not a good way to choose your fuel to get higher MPG...

I'd guess that most people assume higher RON == more power, solely because high performance engines REQUIRE high octane. Because they use a higher compression ratio... And make the reverse assumption that it's the higher octane that gives the higher power.

In your blade, it won't make any diff... Unless psychologically perhaps counts...

    As usual... YMMV...

I recall reading many years ago that all Japanese bikes are designed to run on low octane rated fuel ( 2 star) as that was all that was available in Japan.

glad it's not just me that notices this. If I ride the same on super as I do on regular then I always seem to get the fuel light on 10-20 later

I also use the super unleaded as i also get better mileage and also it feels a little bit crisper in throttle response... or is that just me?
