So i did some playing with my HM quickshifter today. I had the sensitivity set at 75 and the kill set at 62 and found when changing gear at 4-6000 revs i was getting perfectly smooth shifts and when changing at between 9 and 12000 revs there was a small lurch.. Im not getting false neutrals anymore but when i lightly tap up gear i sometimes get a terrible rattling noise, extremely high revs and then instead of going to the next gear it bounces back to the gear i was in... Im almost certain this is because im barely tapping the gear peg instead of a firm jolt or kick..... I decided to put the sensitivity up to 85 and the kill to 57 and this has worked nicely for the shifts now at high revs, no more lurching just a nice smooth change of gear, perfect. However im still getting that bounce back when i change up to lightly, anyone know whether this could cause damage to the gearbox?? I know i need to be more positive and firm with gear changes but sometimes its difficult if your accelerating hard as your body, legs and feet are being forced backward..... Im now hoping a set of gilles and gear shift support my help.....
Hi Matt, sorry missed your call, been so busy and now behind on emails, PM, phone the lot. With such a high sensitivity it's highly possible that you will miss gears, problem is the kill will take place before the lever has engaged the next gear, you have to be positive with the shift as well, peddle setup helps massively but with the standard rearsets it's limited and hard to get right, also the stock rearsets are so slick it makes it hard to feel where you are on the lever, also a higher sensitivity is often used and this can cause false neutrals with half hearted shifts like I say. With so many different riders and boot sizes etc etc etc there is no one setting for all, I'd strongly recommend some rearsets and take extra time to set the peddle so it's comfy and easy to make a clean shift with your foot, you should be able to get it near perfect.
I have standard rearsets on mine Matt. Sensitivity is at 65 and the kill at 62 .I'm still running mine in awaiting first service so shifts see about 7500-8. It's super smooth and slick . I messed about with it ok the abba stand setting the sensitivity tho. It says shift on the LCD when it's literally about to go into gear.. Sure yiur serttings may be different as everyone has different factors that contribute to where is ideal but thought it wouldn't hurt to share.. I've not tried using the shifter lower revs as I was advised it wuld be notchy eyc as you have to set it at the sweet spot to where you change.. Lovely lovely piece of kit aren't they
I had a feeling you were bogged down with work Arthur, especially at this time of year, so thought i'd put this out there.... I did the test putting the bike in gear and then lifting the foot peg and at 75 i was still having to use some considerable force before the shift would flash up, for this reason i put the sensitivity up to 85 and although im still having to use a little force it feels more in line with what my foot would be doing, if that makes sense?? I am going to play with it again today as the weather is nice again and see if 80 works ok... I do know that every time ive missed a gear it was when i barely touched the gear peg making me think that i wasn't positive enough, so a set of gilles will be ordered any day now..... I dropped the kill time because i was getting nice smooth changes at 4-6000 revs but more jolty sifts at 9000+ revs, since cutting the kill im now getting nice smooth shifts at the 9000 revs+ which is where i like to use the shifter, hope that sounds about right?? My main concern was is me missing gear for the short term until i get some rearsets likely to cause damage to the gearbox??? Thanks....
Just got to drop the GF off at work Daz so will reply when i get back but your feedback is appreciated mate....
Daz i was under the impression that the test goes like this, or this is how i test it for sensitivity.. While the bike is on its paddock stand i put it in second gear, (engine off) and with my hands i lift the gear peg up, wait until i hear it engage in gear and then look for the shift to flash up, i am under the impression that the shift should flash up just after the gear has been engaged???? With not to much force???
Mat I have just bought some of the diamond rearsets for £160 delivered a lot cheaper than giles and they have plenty of adjustment for the money I am happy as the chinease ones I had were £130 and no where near the same adjustment as the diamond ones also seem well made so maybe worth considering .
Do you have a link for where you get them from Jase, they also have to work for the abs as they are very different???
I did the test with the bike in 6th Matt.. If you pull the clutch and work the peg it should say shift just as the gears engaged . You'll hear the ignition cut as it attempts to find a gear that's not there . I found this way easier as I could hold the revs where I'd chsnge to simulate riding. Does that make any sense
I have a set of Gilles rear sets on mine I know there are expensive but I think you get what you pay for I also have a QUICKSHIFTER fitted and I have the kill set at 55 and sen set at 45 and for me this seems about right
Wow those are some interesting settings Clarkey but if they work then all is good, just goes to show the differences for different bikes/people....
So went out again today for about an hour, gave up after nearly being knocked off for the third time but decided to keep my settings as they are for now as im getting excellent changes at 9000+ revs. I kept all my up-shifts nice and firm and had no issues but will be replacing the rearsets in the next week or two for sure.... Daz i haven't done that 6th gear test but i did notice that when i change gear from 1st into neutral the revs are killed for a very very very tiny amount of time, like a blip just as im changing up which i presume is similar to your 6th gear test?? Would be interesting to see what everyone else's settings are on....
I want to unravel the cable round my HM Quickshifter sensor but I'm not sure how. Can someone please advise me as I don't want to change the height of the gear lever again.
Nothing is written in stone if I take my bike on the track I would up the kill time , but the sensitivity I would keep the same As I've said before it just seems to work for me
mate you should not have to change your rearsets i put an sp quickshifter on my bike works brilliant no issues and no rearset change
