That's a big shift from a Linn system to something which sounds very different. Its a shame you didn't get to use it, I always have my system on due to the rubbish on TV, so it's either bike, music, gigs, pub or curry house are the only options for me. I did mix them a couple of years back when my shop helped sponsored a Super Sport bike in the BSB series! I still love my vinyl and pride my shop on it's pedigree as a proper analogue store. Having never really 'got' cd I really do get high quality streaming as it's such a great way to listen to music, Sonos has it's place but streamed studio master recordings can sound sublime.
Recently purchased Akurate DS/1 in black and Akurate 4200 speakers are 242s which I believe can be Exakted, speaker cable Linn tri wire. I still have a Kairn but it isn't used.
Yeah, once i went valve with a tube technology unisis, i never went back to SS. MSFL recordings sounded fantastic. i met a lot of designers and makers of equipment, they are so passionate about what they do, but each had a different outlook on what was the "best" or ideal sound. Tim de Pavarancini was mad as a tree. Nottingham Analogue fronted by Tom was a fabulous guy, and i liked him the most. I used to buy most of my gear from Kev at Definitive. Always sent his kit up for me to home dem, not the cheapest dude around, but aftercare and trade in was fantastic. That said, you guys always looked after me too.
There are Exakt tuneboxes available for them but you may be better trading them along with the 4200 for a pair of aktiv Akubariks as you'd need a further 6 channels of amplification to take the 242s aktiv and the Akubariks outperform the 242s by a long way. How come you don't use the Kairn or is it a DSM you have, I've found that using a preamp rather than the enabling the volume control inside the DS to be a better sounding solution.
Nice to hear we looked after you. Tubes are very different to SS - I stock Sugden class a amps which give a valve like sound but without the hassle and a little less heat. I know Kev as I used to stock his speakers many moons ago, haven't seen him for a while though. It's interesting how many of us have very similar interests though!
It isn't a DSM, I keep meaning to try the Kairn but I am doubtful of actually putting another main powered device in the signal path. Surely it is purer to send the signal direct to the speakers rather than put it through another device. TBH I think the Akurate Exakt is out of my league too. Interestingly enough at a recent demo of the Klimax Exakt I was very impressed by Gilad's demo of vinyl through the Exakt. The first time I have ever thought WOW that sounds good about vinyl.

bloody hell Si, i'm worried about spunking a few hundred on Sonos and you flash your gash (sorry HiFi)
I anyone else reading this thread and thinking it's written in Welsh??? You lost me after Sonos 1 tbh...
I think you'll find that connecting the Kairn up and going into Konfig and switching off the internal volume control should give you an overall better result, those digitally attenuated volumes put lots of noise in the audio path. A KDS > KK > twin sounds better than KDS straight into a twin, Linn got round the problem by having a more traditional volume control in when they introduced the DSM which obviously needed in built volume control. If you don't use it turn off the songcast setting in Konfig too and let me know what you think. Vinyl should always sound good albeit different to digital sources. I've got a Linn vinyl day on Saturday in the store showing the difference between various levels of Linn turntables.
Sorry about that, it has got a bit specific! Although Chester is close to Wales I can guarantee I'm English
Toffee, i think Kev and i should have a ride out to Adventures, sample your wears and have a brew! I know Lee and Firebloke are into their tunes too, and most dudes i know that are into all genres of music are also bikers and for some reason are foodies?..maybe there's a connection.
Sounds like a plan to me, there's parking outside in the layby or round the back of the store. Just let me know when and I'll make sure the kettles working and the biscuit tin has been replenished
With a Wifey at home and 3 kids I never get chance to ramp up the Dance Tunes at home so I lobbed 2K worth of Pioneer ICE in to Wifey's Merc Estate. Most of it is hidden so she was none the wiser until she pulled out the boot floor protector one day and found a Flat Sub hiding underneath! I was then forced to give her a demo so as to justify the hardware. Didn't mention the Amps hidden behind the wheel arch covers or the 10 replacement speakers hidden behind door cards etc etc!
Ok toffeeboy. I've reincarnated the Kairn and I'm convinced. Now I have to listen to everything again.
£25k to listen to some music - jesus !!! iPhone plugged into the Onkyo amp through B&W 602's is just fine !! ( You audiophiles will think its **** though ! )
Great news! Don't forget to change your konfig settings too. If you think that's good I can see and Akurate Kontrol winging your way soon ;-)
Not at all, as long as you are happy with the way it sounds that's great. Remember it's all about listening to music and a hifi system is just the vehicle that allows you to do that. It's just like bikes, I started with an AP50 back in the day but that doesn't make me any more or less of a bikes than I am now, same rules apply to hifi
