Cleaning my rear wheel yesterday I noticed that I had a 190/55 X 17 tyre on which was fitted by the dealer when I asked them to swap out the Corsa SP's off the SP for more of a wet weather tyre. Well this evening I looked at the SP's that came off and the rear is a 190/50 X 17. My question to the collective is. 1. Are 55 profile tyres ok? What advantage if any? 2. Do they effect the speedo having a larger circumference? 3. Should I give the dealer **** for fitting the wrong tyre?
1) Yes, better all round! 2) Yes, they correct your standard over reading Speedo! 3) No, U should thank them profusely!
Sinewave said it all ') You should thank your dealer! 55 profile has no impact on the speedo, but the bike turns quicker, while the tyre offers more grip while cornering. Enjoy!
Sorry Martin but no, tyres going back on only changed because a track day I was doing at RAF Valley was forecast rain, and boy did it rain that weekend :-( Sorry guys about the double post, bloody touch screen tablets!
Does anyone here think this might be why I'm having this ABS problem at high speed because the ABS has been setup for a 120/70X17 and 190/50X17 combo of these tyres? Had it again at weekend, braking hard front dives then releases but came back again, road was dry and tyre up to temp.
The ABS lark is nowt to do with the Tyres. My ABS played up over the Summer months last year with a 50 and 55 series tyre on. As soon as I had HEl lines fitted and a full and very comprehensive bleed all has been fine to this very day!
Isn't abs to do with wheel speed and sensors? A 55 shouldn't change the wheel speed of the front, just reduce the amount of cycles the rear turns in comparison to the front due to increased diameter? In my simple brain anyway.... So on that basis it's something else rich
I am sure there has been a few threads about this, but use one of the many available online calculators and there will be a difference in the speedo reading. The rolling radius difference is just over 3%, so maybe not much, but it is different. As for the ABS system, not sure I understand enough about how it works on the bike to say, but the rolling radius is closer to the front using a 55 section rear tyre. In cars that also have tyre pressure monitors the ECU monitors the rolling radius to determine if a tyre loses pressure, which can be reset when changing tyres, but note sure how the Honda ECU monitors the front and rear tyres. Having just changed to a 14 ABS bike from a 12 ABS, tyre profile seems to be an important factor, had S20's on both bikes from new, tried Pirelli Rosso Corsa's on the 12 bike after the S20's but they seemed to drop into corners too much. Changed to BT023's at the end of last year, and they seemed very reluctant to turn in. But the S20's on the new bike feel great again, just have to imagine where to turn in and it just does it. So maybe a 55 section on a "touring tyre" may help with turn in and give good mileage.
Been a car mechanic and working on a lot of BMW's I know all about the tyre monitoring systems which measure wheel speed and can flat tyres by wheel speed variations, however I don't know enough on how the Honda system detects/calculates wheel speed variations and how the system controls braking. Before the SP I had a 13 plate ABS repsol which I took on the track but never experenced the problems I'm having now. It's not the spongy brake problem but no front braking with solid lever and only happens a high speeds, three times on track, once on road.
Ahh just the man I need to talk to.Runflats 20" on an x5 keeps scrubbing the inside edge on offside rear.Bmw say the tracking 4wheel is spot on.The BMW independant says use non runflats.Runflats on that particular car was always an issue.06 lemans edition.Car has a spare so what would you suggest. Before I shell out another grand on tyres.
Have a look on BMWland, and if it has not had a proper "Hunter" 4 wheel alignment, then get that done first.
Having the Tracking 'Spot on' is not the same as a full geometry 4 wheel alignment carried out on a Hunter Rig or Equiv'. E Class Mercs are renownd for this problem, so much so that Mercedes had to issue adjustable Camber Bolts for the front end (not fitted as standard even now) to correct the problems. Our Car had to have 3 of them to straighten it out, not that I helped matters by fitting an H&R Coil Over suspension kit to be fair! She runs true now and doesn't chew Michelin Supersports for breakfast anymore! Book yer sen in to a garage near U from here then take it from there. Align My Car | Wheel Alignment saves you ££'s and much more!
Thanks lads, I will ring the dealer first cos they used a 4wheel alignment system not sure what system it was though.
Common problem on the X5's we recommend customers to rear tyres on the FULL LOAD tyre pressures and check pressures weekly. Even though the X5 has tyre monitoring unlike the Mazda's it doesn't monitor the actual pressure just the wheel rotation, so if all the tyres go down by 5 PSI the BMW system won't tell you as the rotational speed between all the wheels won't of changed. Hope this helps SIDEWAYS.
Place in Ashford has the hunter system mate, jnct 10 by the McDonald's- used to get the Golf set up there
