Perhaps a faulty sensor or wiring. Disconnect the sensor wiring, leave the wires open circuit (think it operates on closed circuit) and see if it still comes on, if not change the sensor.
I'm also having trouble starting the bike, have to open the throttle before it will fire, would this relate to a bad temp sensor?
Does it only come on for a minute or so then go off? If so its normal, mine does it sometimes so do others.. Not all the time but occasionally.
Can't tell when i'm riding it but when it's at idle or when I rev engine say to 3000revs it stays on ( keep in mind the bike is nowhere near up to temp at this point ).
No not straight away, I was having trouble starting the bike when it was hot, say if I stopped for fuel I had to let the engine cool down first but now it not starting cold unless I give it some throttle.
They may not be related, but did the two issues start at the same time? I had a similar issue on the 929, recall it being the air instake temp sensor I think- But the fan wasn't affected.
Do your clocks read the correct water temp? Ie it's not reading over 105 when it's realy cold? The fan is controlled by the ecu based on the engine temp. If the engine temp sensor is working it's either a wiring short or the ecu has a problem.. If your having to give it throttle to start could be the bike thinks its warm perhaps and not engaging the cold start circuit? When starting from cold is it hard to keep it running and you have to keep it on throttle or it will stall?
As you have the fan on, and the ecu is acting like it thinks the bike is warm when it's not it could be your ecu... Not good news but impossible to dianose over the internet properly. You can fit an us spec ecu without hiss for about £80 from eBay mind otherwise it big money for a uk one and swapping all the hiss rubbish over.. Could be worth taking it somewhere to be diagnosed properly.. It could be the temp sensor but as your clocks are reading right it's unlikely..
As said the fan does run at low temp, not sure of the reason for this but Honda seem to want the fan to run in the warm up time, you say hard to start, what's the air filter like? When did it last have plugs, what mileage has the bike covered, if high miles when did it last have a shim check, I'd want a little more info before saying what's wrong
service done about 8 months ago, air filter, plugs all changed and valve clearences checked, bike mileage 24,000, I've also recently had to change the alternator and the rectifier as one of the coils on the alternator had burnt out causing me charging problems.
Ok, if you still have starting issues and your 100% sure the filter is clean and no guests have camped out in your air box over the winter (if stored in an out building etc), I'd want to know how the bike is fueling, with the service did they do throttle body's sync?, do you have a powercommander fitted? If you have to open the throttle to fire up it suggests the bike is over fueling and flooding the motor, odd with a fuel injected bike, poor atomization of fuel can also cause a problem, stale or contaminated fuel for example clogging an injector, fuel injector cleaner is worth a punt if so but you'd need it to start and risk a good ride to pass it through the system, its not the first time new plugs can cause a problem too, just coz they are new does not mean they have not failed, not the first time I have fitted new Champion plugs and they cause poor running, I use genuine Honda branded plugs, I am only guessing to the cause of the problem and could be way off the mark.
On the service worksheet they show throttle bodies done, I don't have a power commander fitted, I did think about the injectors and already flushed through with redex cleaner, went out last weekend after fitting the alternator to check it was ok, near enough used a full tank.
