Hi Guys I know this one has been brought up many times before but I'm ready for a set of tyres. What's the best to go for and do I go 50 or 55 profile on the rear ,don't want to spend silly money but I don't want cheap ones . Cheers Stu
Any body would think I worked for them ! But for UK riding, Michelin pilot road 4's. They warm up quick give excellent grip and my pr3 lasted 6k miles hard miles including a tract day, oh yeah and wet grip is amazing. They are the best all round confidence building tyre I've ridden on As for 50 or 55 well !? I had a 55 on but could only get a 50 profile ( quickly ) so fitted that and for road riding I couldn't tell the difference to b honest , it does help to quicken the steering by way of tipping over off the higher profile tho
Personally I tend to stick to Bridgestones. Currently running S20s and had 016 pros before that. I did consider some Metzler M5s but the S20s cost me less than £200 delivered so it wasn't a contest. Personally I have never got in with Michelins whether they were on a bike or a cage, but other people seem to like them. Never ridden a 55 profile so couldn't comment on that part of the Q.
Agree with Andy that the PR4 is the best all round tyre going and only a decent rider in the fast group on a Track Day would gain any benefit from using more dedicated track based rubber. Wet grip is the best of the best. 55 series all day long.
Pirelli Rosso Corsa's in 55 profile. Just fitted them to mine, they have transformed the bike, Tyreleader was the cheapest. Think they were £230 a pair delivered with the 55 profile rear.

No the 2ct are not or perhaps never will be old hat just things have moved on and of course has the hype . I have the PR4s and love them but don't really like the look of them .Question how many on this forum including me can really say " On the road" that they can ever get close to maxing out a 2ct answers on a postcard please.
Has nobody tried Dunlop Sportsmart 2's or heard any comments about them? Oh and my next purchase probably will be them with 55 profile as I am a 55 virgin Want I'd like to know also amongst all you 55 connoisseurs is the wear rate different on 55 over 50 i.e do they square off quicker or slower? cheers
+1 55 virgin.. can't make up my mind for this year either.. I know this has been debated round and round, but the PR4's / Sportsmarts / 2ct are the ones I'm trying to narrow down..
A PR4 will do between 4500-6000 miles on a blade depending on how much of a Loon ya are! What more dya need to know at £270 a set?
had the dunlops on my zx7r and i was well impressed,however i will never forgive them for thier sportsmax that where fitted from new on a zxr750 i bought new in 1989 !! hated dunlop since :-0 just goes to show how one bad product can put you off for life !!? but liked them sportsmart 2's, but only lasted 2500k miles thou !! ............ replaced them with michelins !!
Here's the thing, had a 55 profile rear put on my SP by mistake, didn't even know until weeks later that the bike dealer had put it on. Found turning in quick but after speaking with the Senior Honda Technician he think's this maybe why I've been having the high speed ABS problems because not only does it use the sensors on each wheel but also the speed sensor on the gearbox. Gone and got correct tyre fitted now but due to the rain this weekend bike is still on paddock stand and unable to test this theory out :-(
It only had about 500 miles left on it Jay and got discount on new one for their mistake. However the ABS thing may have some truth in it if the system uses the gearbox sensor, I know all about car ABS but on their system usually the rear wheel speed sensors are used to calculate vehicle speed. Wait until the test ride and I'll let you know, also bike going in 2nd for brake bleed too.
Well mines an ABS also and has worked just fine for nearly a year with a 55 series tyre on. And I have 'tested' it fully on very wet slippy roads at high & low speeds. Never seen any fault lights either unlike some...........
That's good to know Jay, I'll put that to them unless it's something to do with having race ABS on, who knows!
