Well I went out for my first proper hot day run out today with a mate who's just passed his test. He was following me because he wanted to see if he could pick up any riding tips from watching me (hilarious, I know) and instead he was treated to the sight of me chucking the bike into a corner that, looking at the hedgeline, I assumed to be a fast 45° lefter which in fact turned out to be a mid-speed 90° corner. Through a combination of braking and steering I managed to save it but not before I went completely across the other side of the road and had to use a banked piece of grass verge to regain the road whilst still probably doing approximately 30mph. I broke / forgot my own rule of slow in / fast out and only when you can fully see the exit of the corner. I was rustier than I thought. Lesson learnt.
Nice save Rich, went out and got a bit carried away myself today gave it some beans past loomies and an Audi decided to do a three point turn in front of me.. Managed to stop it but locked the rear and slid around the place. Anyway your absolutely right bring the speed up slowly peeps
It was a bit silly season out today, mate. I doubt I'll have been the only one making a mess of things in this county either.
Easily done mate, glad your OK. I ride all year round so seldom have long without a ride and have been riding for 41 years. I still make mistakes every now and then especially when I am feeling very confident (overconfident). I also have to remind myself now and again that although I don't like to admit it, my reactions are slower than they were when I was 17. Having said that, my 'bravery' and feeling of invincibility on a bike have reached shall we say a more sensible level.
Naaahhhh I just mot'd the r6 today. Put it on the warmers before I went out then nailed it to helmsley and smashed the yorkshire tt
That's where I was, Tyke. The incident actually happened on the road between York and Helmsley. Not long before Brandsby.
Like you say it's probably not such a bad thing to get a poke in the ribs reminder early on in the year.
It may have not have happened even at that speed if your mate was not following ! Prior to the corner you could have had a quick look into the mirror and this might have been enough to throw you offline.
Aye, Giv. To be fair I was kinda concerned that I was going a bit too fast for him and was constantly checking my mirror to see if he was still with me. So it could well have been.
Was leaving Tweeks on Friday afternoon and heading back Whitchurch way. There is a long single arrow straight bito carrigeway/Bypass leaving Wrexham Ind Est up to the A525 Roundabout. Fair doo's I was 'Pressing on' down here but a couple of Chav's in their Nova were attempting to overtake 2 cars following an Artic along here and were about 3/4 the way past the whole train. I was closing fast and said Chav decides to swing fully to the right hand side of the road, rather than hug the side of the Artic so I was left with little choice but to go between them and the Artic at probably still 70 odd. Just glad he didn't have a change of heart and swing back left! My closest shave yet on our deathtrap roads!
Good to hear you're OK, and you can live and learn from it I've been caught out on a few corners myself in the past. Luckily, like you, there was nothing coming the other way! I'm a lot more cautious on roads I don't know now...
If you ride bikes they will one day make a monkey of you, its part of the deal, inevitable. Just cut the chances down as best you can, and you mostly get away with it. I hope you have the good fortune I've had. Mike.
