for me its on top of the lid, but on the side is not bad at all either.
If i were you I would try both views before sticking.
If you do cock it up you can releae the sticky (eventually) with hair dryer and work around mount...slowly!
check out zippysworld on youtube if you want to see footage from in top of my lid :)

If you get it wrong use a hair drier and dental floss as it follows the contour of the helmet, never use a hard object.

I put it on my mirror using a handlebar mount! doesn't cause any damage to bike or helmet.

Got a Contour HD with handlebar mount fitted to the mirror. Mount has rubber insert so no damage to bike.

If you are intending doing Trackdays then most won't allow Lid mounted camera's.

I have the older Drift hd170 which is very good. Got it cheap from ebay for a European tour, I wasn’t expecting great things from it but the results were very good. . Sometimes when stationary it suffers from the ‘jelly effect’ where the image ‘shimmers’ a little, but is usually v’ good. I’ve read a review which says the latest Drift HD isn’t quite as good as the hd170 but I don’t know.

Depends on the circumstances but I think helmet mounted cameras (for motor bikers) make you look a bit of a p***k, and can be irritating to view the footage because it’s moving all over the place with every head movement. Much better IMHO to have it mounted solidly on the bike. Mine was mounted under the front fairing on my old R1 and is in the same place on my RR7.

Super strong Velcro is amazing but I wouldn’t trust it on a long trip. I fixed the mount with small bolts, I didn’t fancy drilling my fairing but it’s quite neat and once it’s done it’s done. I had to experiment a few times to get totally vibration free results which involved a couple of bits of sponge in between the camera and fairing bottom in front of and behind the mount, this stopped vertical camera wobble.

The quality in the link below is better played direct on a pc.
