Now I know its high risk carrying spare fuel...... but has anyone ever used anything (a get you out the crap) miles from anywhere canister ? Is there such a thing ? The autobahns will have plenty of fuel stops when I do German Moto Gp in July..... but I would nt mind having something to turn to if it goes pear shaped......
Pedal power! Lol.... Never have mate, and in 5 years touring, prob 15k miles and 30 dudes in total only ever ran out (not all of us) once.... Had a few close ones though, but that's where sat navs come in to their own! Nearest station - usually gets you out of trouble. That said, Bruce has some that are fold up I think when he was in the arse end of Nowhere....
Taxi drivers are the answer. If I was stuck somewhere and had no idea where to get some fuel I would track down a taxi and ask them. Some even showed me the way for free. I used to do this in the pre-internet/smart phone/Amiga 500 days and so it should be a lot easier these days, especially with the translation apps that are out there.
The only time we ran out, French bloke stopped to check we were ok, drove us to station, waited for us to fill up cans and drove us back to our bikes prob 30 mile round trip..... I vote just wing it rob - all part of the adventure.
How good was that guy, generally I think the French have a far better attitude to bikers. I had a similar experience a few years ago, I was running low on fuel. I asked a guy where the nearest petrol station was, and he said 'follow me' (in French) after about 10 minutes, got to a small village and fuel stop. Cant see that happening here .
In one of the Baron's vids when he went Barcelona, He had one, It looked like a small fire extinguisher, He said it would be good for 15 miles. That's 15 miles less to walk or push.
we use them quite a bit on the monkey bikes due to small tanks and big engines. go to go outdoors or similar and get an aluminium drinks bottle with a good sealing screw cap.
Those Frenchie bikers are great........... had a guy ask me outside a dealers in Straford upon Avon where he might get a bit of welding done to his frame a couple of years ago during the weekend of the bulldog bash........... "Pal of mine will sort that I said" sent mate pic via phone "Yes bring him round" he said....... unknown to me he had 40 mates waiting on street corner and like a scene from "Wild Hogs" I led these "Angels" to my mates house.....fair play as they bought me a few beers in fact so many I could nt ride home !!!!!!!!!
Don't knock us all Bloke on a cycle stopped near my house the other day and seemed to have a problem with his bike. Popped out to check and he had a flat front tyre, and no spare tube or repair kit so told him to wait a minute whilst I went back in. Got a spare inner-tube, track pump and tyre levers and went out and fixed it for him, not a difficult job but he wasn't overly confident. I did it as other have also helped me before, yes in the UK, and I still pull over if I see a bike, motor or pedal, and they look in trouble. Oh and the next day when I got back to the house he had put a brand new inner-tube through the letter box even though I had told him not to worry about it See there are still some decent people around.
If your on on S1000rr then use Rain mode on any long motorway stretches as it gives better fuel economy, then use sport or race for the twisty bits. Both my mates with S1000rr's do this and it does help stretch the fuel a bit more and on the whole the BM is about the same as my 09 Fireblade.
An empty 1 or 2 Litre Squash bottle filled with Unleaded shoved in the Kreiga is all ya need if ya wanna cover all possibilities.
A bit 'O' rubber small bore pipe, about 2' long. you can use it to syphon. someone will have a water bottle, or some container. first guy that stops, or your mate can help. We sorted a guy last year in France he was pushing his Ducati up a motorway, we stopped syphoned a half litre, got him to the fuel stop. Happy guy. ........... Mike,
You can get a really good range on the s1000rr - better economy than a GS just a smaller tank Honestly after a tank of juice you will want a stop - learn to use the fuel computer / trip metre / fuel gauge and all is good - Bit like me leading 20 fireblades down to Moffat last year - loads started to panic, all made it with loads left and no dramas - amazing how most worried could only put in about 13 litres and had no idea he had 4 litres left = 40 mile range
While stopping for a pee on the A64 after a night out I came across a french Biker with a flat front tyre. In his broken English he said his mates were just up the road but had not realised his plight yet. Luckily we were in my mates van and I had a little tyre business in York, so we put the bike in the van and went to do the repair. Within the hour there were 20 french guys at the workshop, they put up their tents in the field next to the unit and after a quick empty of the the local off license we were enjoying a few... Following morning we waved the guys off, tyre repaired. They were going to Olivers mount for the racing. For the next 2 years of owning that business I had so many bikers call in to blow tyres up, or weld bits or just to say hi I couldnt believe it. I think the indigenous Englishman is every bit as helpful and I hope our Sons and daughters continue this way. Dont let the bad ens' win ey.
Halfords do a flexi pipe hand pump thingy for siphon duty and costs under £3 so good and handy to have under the seat.
If there are a few of you going just take a syphon tube and a small coke bottle. That's what we are doing for Assen.
