New bike check over

    I recently bought a CBR1000RR4 track bike and because it was a track bike I thought I would get it checked over before riding it.

    I took it to MCT to check the suspension was working as it should and that all was setup correctly. It had some wear and a service was required but it did confirm that it had Ktech internals.

    Whilst it was there though Darren noticed that the chain was missing it's clip link as it wasn't the riveted type. The link could simple be eased off with your finger and I hate to think what might have happened if I had been going full chat around Snetterton when that decided to come off!

    The previous owner had also removed the crash bungs and didnt think to put the engine bolts back in. Surely that isnt good?

    So after picking the bike up off MCT I dropped it off to Mototechnics in Stowmarket. They seem like nice genuine guys and so they are sorting out a new chain, engine/frame bolts and are going to fit a horn and number plate so they can give it a daytime MOT. Just in case I fancy a quick ride round.

    I was wondering about the steering damper, and if this needs servicing or replacing with a different unit? It currently has the standard unit fitted.

    Cant wait to get it back!

    I run a 2005 model trackbike and yes, good move to have the suspension serviced, new oil, seals etc. but don't think you need to service the steering damper. I suppose it depends on your level on track, I've heard of guys changing the unit for an aftermarket one but not sure you really need to. Mine has 42,000 miles on the clock and I have no problems with it.

    when you start to get to the sharp end on t/days think about another damper,but until then no need.

    Ok great thanks. I'm only 'Inters' so wont be needing one of those yet. I just wasnt sure, as they are electronically controlled, if they go wrong and need checking now and again. Id rather not find out its knackered with a tank slapper.

    Not good news, the guys at Mototechnics said that after they had done all the work and given it the MOT, they took it for a test ride and once the engine got to temperature and they opened it up, a knocking/ticking noise could be heard.

    Their diagnosis was that it needs a new engine. I guess 6000 miles of track life can be hard on an engine but I haven't even ridden the bugger yet.

    I thought better of the guy selling it though.

    Anyway, has anybody got a good engine they want to get rid of?
