It's usually third and fourth that goes on the blade you can just replace those gears at about £100 each then have them undercut

it's not the gearbox as such that costs the money though,it costs more to drop the engine, split and rebuild.gsaskets cost over £100.if oyu dont drop the engine+re fit yourself your looking at silly money.

The ZX10R gearbox weakness, if one can call it a weakness, is that the gear selector forks can bend under extreme use.

This in reality means Racing and even then being as the Kwak box is of the cassette type this is a very easy and cheap job to do, team mechanics do this in the Pit garages if needs be.

Yeah well mines done 2 full racing seasons under me and a TT under someone else so not surprised its buggered! Ill get pics of damage when I get it back.

Engine builder showed me a 2 year old zx10 and it was totally buggered too. Was a top road racers superstocker and oil pump, timing chain, gearbox and all sorts totally ruined. They can only take so much stress racing and quick shifters dont help either!

Just gotta rebuild it and carry on :D

(PS my bikes away getting new crank after a low side. Bummer or what!!)

I took the very wise decision (although I say it myself) to barter a Free upgrade to the 4 year Guarantee in to my new bike deal!

basically if bike slides on it's side for too long, and doesn't cut out (tilt switch not doing it'd job,or removed) then it can starve the sump of oil, resulting in a knackered crank, also if the cases hole through and grit gets inside whilst still running can lead to no end of problems.

if you wouldn't call it a weakness, what would you call it,normal wear and tear? i'd go for weakness myself ;)

As a 'standard' Road Bike Gearbox not specifically built for Race use then yes I would call it normal wear n tear if used for Racing! [IMG]

Now, if on the other hand they failed on the road or were notchy and hard to engage on full throttle upshifts like my outgoing Blade then that's another matter! ;)

do you really think they make the zx10r with road riders in mind? (well obviously they do,but it's not thier main reason).they are predominatley made for racing, thats why 90% of the zx10's made in the last 2 yrs aren't on the road, they are on track.

oh and here, you dropped something [IMG]

but yes, honda gearboxes are borderline a manufacturing defect with the amount of them that get shagged.

mines done 10,000 hard road miles and two seasons of trackdays / evenings keep getting a false neutral when down shifting which when i spoke to guys that have put Nova,s and HRC transmissions in they said thats the first sign of it on its way out , so hope mines not to bad it can be undercut

Only takes a handful of revolution for a crank running without oil to be shagged. I am concerned the tip over sensor failed so will be testing it when the bike is back.

Mine made very few jumps out of gear but apparently was on its last legs and if it goes completely they can cause severe engine damage. A fella I race with had his go properly and had to get a new motor as a result! Would be worth checking it out mate.

Would love a nova box but at 2k plus that's the cost of 4 normal box changes... Hmm. Would it last that long ?

Would getting a stock honda gearbox "super finished" not help with the issues?. I believe Tim Radley at race developments does super finishing.
