As some of you may know, I was in south of France a month back - 4 of us had our bikes shipped to Nice - we took a flight and then rode up to Le Grave - and toured the mountains. Well it did not end well for me.. We were in Italy heading through a tunnel, at the end was a van just stopped at the exit of the tunnel, no hazzords no nothing. I was as the back and did not hear the guy at the front saying stop in the interphone..as my exhaust was too loud in the tunnel. There were 3 of us, front 2 managed to stop..me just about stopped..however my shin got caught in the peg of the bike in front (was a slow hit, the guy in front did not fall off the bike). Broke both bones in the right leg. Bike had minimal damage. Got admitted into hospital in Italy..were they put this funky device on my leg with 6 pins going to my bone. (I call it the shoddy Italian Job) Got back to the UK - lucky had buppa cover.. Found my leg is infected and the device is incorrect as they had put the pins in the fracture site at the bottom (visable on the newer xray) - they had to have another operation... Nearly 2 weeks on infection is still there..however getting better.. Taking 6 months to recover is not an option..as I have to work - getting as much done from home.. Still not fun not being able to walk for so long! There was a guy who was passing when I had my accident who offered to keep my bike in his garage till I can get it revered..anyone got any idea's how i can get my bike back? (He even visited me in hospital & dropped me to the airport at 6am (50miles away) - good people do exist! Some pics The Italians put the pins in the fracture site... This bled every day for 6 days The frame I have now - have been told I can start putting full weight and walking on this - however my infection from the previous opp does not allow me to move much :-( There are a total of 10 pins going into my bone..no blood came out what so ever. Interesting bit of kit..no?
Jeez! Not good.... those mechano cages really creep me out Hope your on the mends soon! You cover the cost il fly out and get it back to you really really quick! Seriously though, can't one of your pals just go get it for ya??
Don't mess with the infection, take the antibiotics as prescribed and don't miss any, you need that infection gone. Re getting your bike back put an ad in Courier Services | UK Delivery Service Companies - Shiply Good Luck.
Bugger. Sorry to hear this. I had wondered how you'd got on. What a nightmare. I hope you recover quickly. Can your bike be recovered? A plane ticket and a ride back for someone will be easiest, if not, I reckon.
That's really tough dude and glad you are back over here .you must also make sure you tetanus is up to date as this is really important . I think it's bad enough having a spill over here but not great whilst abroad . Get well soon .
GWS fella, these sort of incidents are a total nightmare and very painful but you'll get through it all and it will soon become a distant memory.
If you want a speedy recovery speak to a guy called Brian Simpson, he's known as the bone doctor, he goes against many Doctors and fixes up many top racers in the UK. The Physiotherapy Clinic Home Page Good luck.
Thanks guys.. I took out RAC Europe cover with my insurance - thinking it would have recovered me..but nope..they will only recover if there is a mechanical issue.. Mike l will give that company a try to check costs.. Physiotherapy is what I need..just unsure if I should wait till the frame comes off..will call Brian to see what he thinks - thanks Aurther... I am doing the basic exercises.. Amazing how quickly the muscle disappears... And comes back with the simplistic of exercises.
Boots - decided on short boots for comfort...and never again...still not sure had I been wearing proper boots if my leg would have been ok..? My shin got trapped in the peg of the bike in front and guessing my peg was behind..as it snapped..
He's an amazing man, ever wondered how racers brake an arm and race two weeks later, he's the answer! Not sure how the infection would work out, but I ain't no Doctor, worth a call... and your health cover may pay for chamber treatment who knows..
I lost 2 inches in diameter on my thigh in 4 weeks thru muscle shrinkage when I broke my fibula just below the knee, had a full leg length cast
Typical, just cos I got one on these in June now everyone bloody wants one However this is the F1 of Fixators with full weight bearing to help it heal while you walk around by flexing slightly to promote bone cell growth, just wish they'd hurry up and grow strong enough :-( Good luck with your healing I'm hoping to get mine off in 4 weeks all been well
