I was riding back home from Derby yesterday. I was getting a bit of a move on.
I turned off the main road and a few seconds later a police car was behind me. First I'd seen of him.
I went round the roundabout and he followed me.
The dreaded flashing blues came on so I pulled over.
He did his PNC check while I took me helmet and gloves off.
I said good afternoon officer etc.
he asked me when I first saw him, which was on the slip road. He said he had been trying to catch me since derby but only caught up because I was turning off.
He said he was doing x MPH, so I must have been doing well in excess of x MPH.
He gave me a massive bollocking and threatened to remove my licence.
After more bollocking he told me to sod off home and don't do it again.
    Phew!

A neighbour of mine is a retired bike and car instructor for Devon & Cornwall feds and in one of our many boozy sessions he told me his rules. "Grabbing the odd couple of metres of double whites to 'finish' an overtake safely is cool". "Over 90 is a piss take." That was about it on the stuff I quizzed him over. What really surprised me was he got really wound up over messing about with your number plate. Change the size or the digit spacing and he would hunt you down.

Struck me as an odd priority but he was adamant about it.

I suffered the wrath of a traffic cop when I had a small plate years ago.
That's the one thing I leave alone now.
You may as well have a big sign saying stop me. And piss off Ken, I didn't say stop me and buy one. Lol

Sounds like you were very lucky or he never had you on camera! Some decent ones about though normally the ones on bikes. I was pulled with some mates last year speeding in a 30 and small number plates all round. They had the old measuring stick out but in the end as we acted very sorry and ate humble pie they let us off with a warning. Have it all on camera for a vlog one day lol

Serious question. Why do people always bang on about being caught on camera? It is not a requirement in order to be booked, and never has been.

Glad he let you off.It could have been nasty. Some coppers would book you for looking at em.I hate the ones that have a point to prove especially ones that think you did something you didn't.The silly bike prick who cautioned me for nowt was promptly reminded who his area commander was.He soon shut up and got on his bike.My mate C Warners brother is probably the worse one in kent.

Can a single officer book you with no video evidence?

Yes, and always has been able to do so. How do you think we did speeders in the past? Most traffic cars were/are single crewed, and I certainly never carried a passenger on the bike to coroborate my evidence ;)

Video evidence is new (in legal terms) and a traffic cop is regarded as an expert, and so does not even need to record your speed to prosecute for the offence of speed reckless, he can simply give evidence of opinion.

But.... This offence is very rarely used, most speed offences are recorded by following with the speed checked by a callibrated speedo head (which is checked every week) Lazer, Truvello, Vascar or other approved device.

If it is a following check, then on Motorways the check is for 1 mile, on all other roads 3/10 of a mile is sufficient.
