Yup for all our Scottish friends and even all the guys on the forum run to Scottish land ,there is a TV programme coming up on Tuesday 12.40 am on BBC 4 ....The Bridge : Celebrating the anniversary of the great Scottish landmark the Forth Road Bridge .
I'll sky+ that or might even catch it at work if we're quiet. Was down under the bridges yesterday, very impressive from that angle. They're making good progress with the new bridge,it'll be quite special once all complete, the 3 bridges from 3 centuries.
The bridge has lasted 50 years and is falling down / end of life Good job rail one over engineered to out last it Agree new one coming on well - will be odd when current is closed and removed - don't know what the plans are though
The current road bridge is not up to the current road traffic that makes use of it that's the issue! It wasnt badly made it just cant cope with todays demands on it! Like all our road network they are only built to the current traffic rates of time of designing/building and few years later traffic well exceeds its designed specs!
Ah, fair point. A morris minor etc weights a fraction of a ford focus, and trucks also upsized a huge amount. I thought it had concrete cancer or similar.
There was a bit of an issue with the cables rusting or degrading slightly years back due to salt air but they solved that by basically runnin big air ducts along the cable lengths and blowing controlled air constantly over the cables so no water can lie on the cables. The amount of traffic using it is it's main problem tho! It was on a tv show about it a couple of months back, showing how it was built and the issues it's had to deal with over the years.
I watched that too Craig it was amazing! It was filmed by one guy back in the day showing the construction and the impact it had on the locals! It was very moving and fascinating! Documenting from the very start to the grand opening the old boys footage brilliant! I just hope that it is released on DVD or blu Ray! I live about 4 miles from the Bridge and totally take her for granted most of the time! Probably because I see her on a daily basis from different views when driving me bus or nipping over her to the Cove! But every now and again she amazes me so I'll walk over her and back again I'm hoping they keep her open for bikes only! We don't weigh much dudes
The bridge is expected to remain operational to give priority for public transport, pedestrians and cycles. Would be good if that included motorcycles
