I should say I am only rabbiting on, you lot know the score.. The 24-105 is such a good bit of kit, f4 maybe but IS does such a good job, you don't realise how good until you spend some time with the "better" 24-70 mkii with NO IS. I am obligated to use the 25-70 f2.8 mkii now for a while and I am loving it, but I feel slightly handicap with less reach and no IS! Most of the snaps I take are like a wild west gun fight, grab camera as fast as poss, don't bother checking any settings as no time, fire off a few shots, work out camera is still set for blinding sun action shots and I'm inside in low light chasing a puppy round with a fast shutter, ISO 100, f11 and so on...lol Thats where this guy came from.. Some flash photography in the day time, like the shot but dogs now blind Boring pet portraits but hay ho.. Pup had a hair in in eye, no reflection so looked odd, focus was slightly off and so on.. f2.8 auto ISO and so on..
Hah! Flash... I've got one of these. Canon Speedlite 430EX II - Speedlite Flash - Canon UK and one of these. Canon U.S.A. : Support & Drivers : Speedlite 550EX I bought the 430, the morning of a wedding I was shooting because when I test fired the 550, smoke came off the head and I panicked. When I got to the church, the 430 fell off the camera (I hadn't locked it off properly) but I caught it on the second attempt. When I used it from the church doors it was throwing shadows of the altar against the end wall. Once I got home and had the chance to check the 550, the smoke was dust on the head actually burning when it fired! I swear these two guns have a recoil.
Ha, I have a 430exii and had (just sold) the mk1, great flash gun, flash photography is something else, another learning curve all together (well for me prob not you guys), Si very kindly gave me a remote trigger and that was it! Off camera flash, another world opened up, so I now have two 600ex-rt and the st-e3-rt, I am learning more and more daily about them and that Si can cost you money! Love low light and cleaver use of light. Low light 1290, taken with BVG (both of us having a pop) here in the yard. Setup was all wrong, i.e using the 5d3 in the wrong manor, I have stolen the same edit BVG used. Another not so dark. No flash in these but the top one was created with a few cheap torches. Again daytime, aperture and shutter control, plus a cheap torch and manual shutter, painting with light.. Spot the ramp clamp on the front wheel.
Si is an evil influence, it's true. Flash is a dark art, ha ha... I have in no way whatsoever mastered it even after 45 years of playing with it, but ETTL tech is so flattering to the user that I'm glad it's part of my kit. In the end, without control of the light, we're wasting our time.
Agree! Having light in the bag offers something very valuable to a photographer, Canons ETTL setup over multiple 600exrt's is AWSOME! Group setup with TTL metering and easy ratio setup on top of the camera with the remote, that or just open up the in camera menu and remotely control the speed lights from the camera menu!!! AMAZING! My mate is just about to pick up my old 430, dying to show him simple tricks, like the Husky, instant studio anywhere kind of thing. He will soon learn its not so much a power thing, when I use my flash it amazes me how little light is needed to add something to a shot, again I only write this for the interests of others, don't want to tell people how to suck eggs but I get a little excited haha, like you say, with sensitive equipment and these HUGLY powerful flash guns its shocking how much light a speed light and poke out! and then there are Grids, benders and boxes, sounds like a dodgy club in Brighton....haha
Mind you, sometimes working with what you got has it's benefits. Came in from my walk last Sunday, kicked of my boots in the kitchen, stepped through into the living room and looked the length of the house to see this.... 55~250, so that's 88~400 on my camera. Glad of the IS.
Funny how you can use 1/10th of all those pixels take a shot like that and peoples minds paint the rest of the picture. Great shot.
Had a big photo processing sesh just before Christmas - these are some of my better shots from 2014: more wishes by Chris McEvoy, on Flickr what jessie wants jessie gets by Chris McEvoy, on Flickr tarn trunk by Chris McEvoy, on Flickr swiss bridge 2 by Chris McEvoy, on Flickr surfer's sunset by Chris McEvoy, on Flickr sand and sky by Chris McEvoy, on Flickr oban sunset by Chris McEvoy, on Flickr mccaigs tower by Chris McEvoy, on Flickr fairy bridge by Chris McEvoy, on Flickr connel bridge by Chris McEvoy, on Flickr
I don't use TTL... i'm too tight.... and i'm used to manual now. I bought 4 yongnou 560ex flashes, and used them in manual mode with cheap triggers...it was a cheaper way instead of 4 600's from Canon LOL. Easy to control different output from each to get the right effect and light for me.
Madmac those are some GREAT pics, love the sculpture! Dog shot is great too, love the eyes! Si you do any flash stuff now?
Believe it or not - the fairy sculpture shot was taken with my phone. It came out a lot better than I was expecting! I would have pleased with that shot from my DSLR tbh. Just goes to show how good phone cameras are getting these days...
No shit! That takes the pi$$! You mean I lug around 20 odd Kg of DSLR and I can use my phone!!! :S :O What phone is that, I'm getting one...lol
Don't get too excited - it was my old Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE and that's by far the best shot it ever took. Must have been perfect conditions for the sensor lol. And as a phone, it was shite...
