Picked up me sp fireblade and decided to put my optimate on .well I ain't daft quite knowledgeable but put the positive on the plus on battery side and negative on other pole, well when I looked at optimate it said it was cross poliraty,so put on other way possitive on neg and negative on poss and it was charging ,never had this happen on any Hondas I have had so is the sp positive earthed can this be so.before you ask the wires are on the right way round,is there anyone else on here with a sp encountered this thanks
If it's cross polarity it shuts off so no harm done but I know u can get poss and negative earth so is it the sp is positive earthed ,maybe Arthur can shed some light on it
It will be neg earth for sure, SP isn't some special one off bike, it's a modded std blade with Swedish gold bits on it.
It is possible to reverse charge a lead acid battery, however it would need to be done from flat, if the leads are the correct way round on the bike and optimate fly lead then I grab a meter before I switched anything on, my advice would be remove it, try the optimate again, if it still reads polarity reversed when connected correctly then you need to meter it to check, recharging it correctly IF it is reversed would have to be completely flat! If the battery was new and hooked up wrong way round for first charge it would not spark or read incorrect on the optimate as it would be flat from first fill, then you would Indded end up with a battery that's the wrong polarity!
Arthur it us charged now on reverse shall I take off battery and put leads on right way then it should revert to correct polarity is this right
On a side note i just got a new optimate charger .I forgot it was still pluged in and i started the bike .Now the green light comes on and nothing else Is it fooked
No reason why using the battery the wrong way round (correct polarity) would cause a problem to the bike, if the meter reads POS + from one terminal and - NEG on the other then that's the way it goes. However battery materials are optimised for electron flow in one given direction, I could not say how use of a reversed battery will be over time, myself I would be tempted to get a new one. Bummer! Marco, if you started the bike and the optimate no longer works Id return it to be replaced, they have built in overload protection and should not be effected, beside I know dozens of people who do just that, myself included from time to time.
Sorted it ,the battery lead was wired the wrong way round so took the pins out and swapped around in plug so poss is + and neg is - .the thing is I have been using this for years and never noticed any problems before, strange but sorted now
I'm confused now Graeme? When U say you've swapped the battery lead around, do U mean the Optimate Battery charging lead?
