I would like to get either a DVD player/writer or Blu ray player/writer.

Unsure what is worth looking at. I would use the Blu ray as it would be ideal when I record holiday vids or trackday vids to Blu ray dave only being able to record 30 mins on a DVD drive in HD.

I've been starting to try out my new Go Pro 4 in the car and bike so would like to burn off track day as well

I would also be using it to burn off my own music onto a CD for me or the wife and would like the option to use a DVD/Blu ray player on my new Macbook

Also would I need new software to burn a blu ray or does anyone know what software would be good for burning blu rays?

    Any recommendations

My one didn't come with any software. Windows allows you to just drag and drop if you want to use it for file storage, and I have other software for bluray copying/ripping.

I might be wrong but I think you can burn directly from the Mac without any extra software.
Insert the disc then right click on its icon and chose burn to disc.

Don't really have much experience with Macs but i think you can burn using iTunes.

Or you can use programmes such as Toast
