I've greatfully had some help regarding fitting 2013 Forks to my 06. I've just bought some 2013 forks to fit to my 06, is there any active members who have done this or can point me in the right direction. Any help greatfully appreciated
Well new forks arrived, Up she goes. Ready to get the old ones out. Out with the old and in with the new. Spacers 5mm wider than standard each side needed. Forks sitcking out 25mm the top yokes to acheive the same ride height. 5mm Alloy plate ready to make the disc spacers. The spindle will need replacing with one 10mm longer. but so far so good
Getting there Arthur were the spacers you had made individual spacers or one big ring ? I was going to go for 1 big ring, I'm thinking ot will be stronger ??, Then I need to order some 23mm m6 bolts for mounting the discs.
Great how to, its something I wondered about before. So how are you going to get around the spindle? Custom job or do you think one from another bike could fit?
Few options. 1, Bespoke spindle, I've contacted a small engineering company who says they can make me one, £80 spindle and spacers £20 each. 2, DIY , cut the spindle, get a solid bar turned down say around 100mm long so its an interference fit, set it up so the spindle is 10mm longer, get it professionally welded then check on a lathe with a dti 3, Get some advice on adding 10mm of tube on the thread side of the spindle and get a longer spindle bolt. Whats your thoughts guys ?
From what I have read the 08+ spindle is the same length and its the newer yokes that makes the difference.
Well the decision is made. This is the difference between the spindle and the forks which I don't think is to bad, Im going to make a 10mm spacer to go on the end of the spindle, I beleive it will keep the spindle truer cutting and welding could cause issues. To give the short side extra strength Ive had a new spindle bolt made 10mm longer so it will fit full width of the fork leg. It's hollowed out the same as the standard bolt to keep the weight down, It's high tensile steel but if it all goes to plan Ill get a better one made out of something more sexy. Any thoughts lads to what I'm doing or if you disagree shout up.
just my 2ps worth I run a small machine shop mainly cnc machines, if you can get a one off spindle and spacers knocked up for £120 that's a good price and a lot cheaper than I could make it for. The guy that does our broaching would want £40 to put the one off hex in. I'd avoid trying to cut and weld you'd never get it back to running true and also what steel are you welding to what steel . Although if you want 10 sets I'll do you them at £60 a set lol.
looking good!! Was going to say £80 seems a bargain.. But quite close on the old spindle will do for now but I would plan to get the proper one sorted also. Quite a tempting upgrade for me as my RR5 forks are to short really and put a lot a weight on my wrists.. These would be a much better length but think I would miss the quick steering you get with a dropped front end. Cant have it all I guess!
You need some raised clip ons lambchops! For piece of mind I would get a spindle machined rather than trying to weld bits together, have you thought about changing the yokes over? Reckon you could get upper and lower for £200 perhaps cheaper might be worth a call to Yorkshiregooner index
I don't see a problem with that, long term you could have a threaded spacer made up with a smaller threaded nut, then you could screw the spacer into the spindle with thread lock and use the smaller nut to pull it all up. Id mechiene the end of the spindle flat if using the threaded spacer up.
I will get the end of the spindle squared off, but the way have have chosen, a 10mm spacer the same ODs as the spindle fitted in the shortside, ill have 22mm of bolt threded in to the spindle.
