I am on holiday in the USA soon and need to know what to look for in a mobile for use over there. I intend to buy it as cheap as possible and put in a PAYG type sim card for use over there. I will not need any data or messaging as its just for if I need to call home or for a number if they need to call me.
If the Mobile is only for emergency use " if they call me" it's not going to cost a huge amount if u use your normal sim. Vodafone change me £3 day to use my normal usage of Date, Texts and Calls. For that I can't be arsed to worry about another sim.
Who are you normally with. Most these days have a travel scheme like Remal mentioned, whilst Three allow you to use you monthly minutes etc when in certain countries. Either way it is not as scary as it used to be as long and you fully disable data.
You can buy a payg phone through AT&T network in any Walmart shops over there for about $35 with $10 credit on ,calls to the UK are very cheep using these local sims mate and you can buy top ups very similar to the UK. You can also buy international phone cards over there to use with your phone or the one you have just purchased to make the calls even cheeper, which is just a 10 digit number you have to enter in front of the number your calling, these can also be bought from Walmart for about $15 if required but not necessary. These phones dont work in the UK but at these prices its no problem. Or like previous posts there is plenty of options. Enjoy you holidays in the US of A , grab yourself a few bargains while your there.

Check your existing phone works on US frequencies and if it does get it unlocked here and get a local AT&T sim at the airport on arrival. You can prob. get one with data for a reasonable cost, or just use wifi in McDonalds etc. to keep in touch via wattsapp and facebook. To receive calls will be free as you will be with a local / native provider. Calling home will be expensive mind.
Calls to the uk from a usa sim is not that expensive using a usa sim, I travel there with work often, like you say you could always use free wifi and skype at no cost.
Am on 3 mobile and can use my plan in the states for no charge, see link below for what they offer and is included http://www.three.co.uk/Discover/Phones/Feel_At_Home?intid=3main_hp_rbn_fah_1804 I bought a galaxy s4 mini (£120 with 3 mobile payg) as a travel phone, 4g enabled and handy as a back up phone if anything happens to your normal one
