7 x 5 and the coppers said just a wee bit bigger when I got stopped a few years ago, said I would have got a ticket if I hadn't just got out of jail and the fact my colleagues 3" chicken strips on his busa were giving him a laugh Used 8 x 6 since and had bikes thru mot too no problem.
north yorkshire cops are famous for doing people for small plates , they have a crackdown about twice a year for very bike leaving squires.
Just measured the plate on my bike, out of curiosity, and it measures 6 3/4" x 6 3/4" but is completely legal but looks like it shouldn't be...not had any police issues as yet, though I guess, one day I'll have a pedantic copper try to do me for it.
As long as the font and spacing are correct, BS number, and dealer/plate maker name are on the plate then the size doesn't matter.
True, but for the 99% of plates that comprise of 7 digits this will end up at a certain size anyway. 8x6 has proved unobtrusive for me over the last few years however I'm under no illusion that one day some young Spunk or Grouchy Jobs Worth whose gettin none at home will do me..........................
As an ex MOT tester I still have the books/guidelines etc, so using them I worked out exactly how much excess plastic I could lose and keep it fine free I did buy a plate from fleabay that was "for offroad use only" and it was bigger than the one I have..
Got done by a right cocky copper for having a small plate. He also threatened me about being caught again he would seize my bike off me. Big plate from now on cos I think assault would put me in prison !!
I run a 7x5 plate and got pulled and slapped with a 100 pound fine, They said if they see me running it again they will de register my bike. I still run the 7x5
8x6 been ok for over 3 yrs even when pulled over for summat else the number plate was never mentioned
www.platecreator.com Really good for bike plates , very customise a bubble Black backs to them as well & usually arrive in 2 days
i have just had some new smaller legal plates made up for 2 of my bikes i have an 11 plate bike, which with legal spacing , letter / number sizes ,spacing and border ,can legally be 7"x6.5". and a 13 plate bike which can be 8"x6.5" . Both have the bs145 and makers postcode on them . This is due to the number 1s only having to be 10mm in width whereas all other numbers and letters have to be 44mm wide. So if you have a number 1 in your reg number you can have a smaller reg legally.
Didn't know I just got the 7x5 and TBH I don't think it looks that bad. Certainly not taking the piss. [/URL]
@exuptoy That's bob on, my plates always been this size & never had any probs.....you'd have to meet a traffic cop having a bad day with a tape measure to fall foul
This is a regular question and to be fare it's all about how the police feel on the day, I used to run a 7x5 however I recently changed to a 7.5x5.5, its only a little biger but it doesn't look large but attracts less attention?
do you see the monkey bike picture to the left ? i have to have a 9"x 7" plate on the back of it to be legal . The bloody wheels are only 8". It looks stupid
Ran 7x5 on most of my bikes but with correct size & font type. Never had any issues but couple of riding pals got fines for small lettering & fancy font styling.
