I am sure this has been discussed a million times on thousands of forums, however, I would like to know what tyres you are running on your blade, what experience you have with them, what have you run in the past and what you would and wouldn't recommend. The reason I ask is, I am new to having a blade (had 600's for years), it came with 2 new Bridgestone BT016's and they have done about 200 miles. I rode home the other evening in the drizzle and lost the back end in a big way under acceleration. I am not nutter by any stretch, I was taking it "fairly----ish" steady and the only reason I got it back is because it let me do so and shear dumb luck, I just shut off in a big panic and looked at which bit of kerb I would be sliding into, fortunately, none this time around. I know tyres can be somewhat of a personal choice, but I am aware the compounds change on a fairly regular basis over the years, so I would like to know, what's good now. Over to you and thank you
If you are road riding, then you will do yourself a favour for the British climate and buy a pair of Mich PR4s. I went through a set of 016Pros in 1200 miles of commuting and had them spinning up in a straight line on a dry cold road on roll on. they great on hot sticky days, but not in shite weather.
I am road riding only, way too old and fragile to go throwing myself around a track, or for that matter, even a road, lol I have only ever removed the pussy strips off 2 bikes I owned, a CBR600, and an R6, and that's because they made me do it I don't intend to remove it on this one. I like to have confidence in my tyres so want them as good as possible, but don't like to push them to the limit these days as the roads are crap and I need a bit of extra grip when the road gets worse through a bend..
PR4s it is then matey, I am getting 8K on hard commuting riding, and these tyres will give you all the grip you need on wet or dry roads.
WOW, that's some mileage out of a set of tyres, I rarely see that from a front. If I can get that much I would be a right happy puppy
I had Bridgestones on the 600 once...awful things in anything other than bone dry, couldnt wait to get them off! Had several sets of Dunlop Sportsmart 2 now, I ride all year around & they great in any weather. Got nearly 8k also out of last set
In that case they are going to give me WAY more grip than I should need. They sound too good to be true. Do you think I would be able to sell my current tyres, are they worth anything second hand? I have never tried to sell second hand tyres before.
I'd say those tires will fly out on the bay. Should get £80-£100 easily for a pair of them with only 200 miles on em.
I wasn't sure when I first tried PR3's but after burning a second set of S20's in Scotland in 4 days I wanted something more durable... I was surprised at the performance of them and durability tbh and 5k+ out of a rear, hooning in Europe was no problem... and at no point do I feel I sacrifice grip. I've said it loads of times, I ran out of balls on the ring way before the tyres ran out of grip! ha...... and seen lads run at sharp end in fast on them.... and the 4's are even better. will try the Metz M7r things at some point but i'd be gobsmacked if they are a better all round tyre....
By chance I bumped into a Michelin rep when I was in a bike shop last week, and we chewed the cud on tyres, and he stated they they made some minor compound changes on the PR4 over the 3 for more wet weather grip, but the main reason was the wear characteristic on the front PR3, now having lived through a set of 4s, I can understand what he means, the front keeps its profile longer than the 3 , and you do not end up so quickly with the 'drop off the edge moment' on turn in. Mine were changed a few weeks back, and like most things in life I realise I much I had taken out of the last set of 4s now I have new hoops on, and was riding around the wear issues.
Cant believe the Pilot Road 4's are so cheap, I was expecting something over priced, not in line with everything else, cool. Time to save up for a new set of tyres me thinks, though with £80 (ish) coming back from the old ones, it shouldn't be too bad at all. Had some BT016 when I first got the blade, scared me sh1tless once or twice especially when it gets cold. Just pulling anyway gently(ish) the rears went loose luckily (though through no skill of my own) the bike snapped back and carried on in a straight line. Used them also on my first track day and they have loads of grip, but TBH I was hardly pushing them. Also used PP3 which I highly recommend. Don't do many Track days any more but now on PR4s. Once they're scrubbed in (that's another story!) the grip especially on the fronts is almost supernatural. Look on tyreleader.com, cheap as chips!
Get the normal ones, IIRC GTs are for the heavier bikes ie beemer tourers, Blackbirds and the such like
Cool, thank u Cant afford them this month, but might try and sweet talk the wife and get them next month, problem is her CBR600 needs a new set of boots soon too
