As a BT customer, I've been getting the BT sports channels for free.
However, I just received an email from BT with news of changes to the T+Cs.
As from 1/8/2015 only BT sport 1 will be free, with the other channels costing £5 per month.
That means, MotoGP coverage will be costing to watch .
I already pay well over the odds for, what essentially is, pretty poor phone/broadband deal (2.5mb download speed).
I was only sticking with BT as the sports were part of the deal, but now..I think it's time to move on.

Virgin looks like it could be an option, at least the broadband speed is nearer the 21st century rather that the 19th..

£5 is nothing to pay for the coverage you get from BT. Compared to what Sky sports charge I think its a really good price. Can you imagine whst sky would charge to show us every minute of a race weekend?Ive cancelled my sky sports and only have BT sports as its more the sports I watch.

I see what you're saying, but I already pay £60 per month to BT for phone & b/band, with stone age connection speeds, then asking another £5 on top for something I already get...the straw and broken camelback springs to mind.
Just having a quick browse of the alternatives have shown that I'm paying well over the odds for an antiquated service, maybe if the much heralded BT Infinity was an option then I might be tempted...but they have already said no to that for at least the next couple of years where I live

£60 per month??? Jesus!!!! No wonder you have the hump. Why is it so much? I only pay £80 a month for SKY TV, phone & BB with every chanel, it will be less now Sky Sports is gone.

Unlimited phone, unlimited b/band plus line rental..I was suffering it simply for the pleasure of watching MotoGP anywhere I could get a mobile signal with the app.

The thing to remember is virgin will be the only other company that will offer better broadband than BT Cos every other provider uses BT's network so if BT only offer 2.5 meg thats all anyone else will get. Wheras virgin has its own network

Do a check on the comparison sites, Virgin's own network does not reach everywhere, but should give you a higher speed if it is available to you.

But before you transfer anything, go back to BT and let them know you want to cancel and let them know what you have been offered.

I did the same recently with Sky, they were just about to put my TV up to £40 a month, told them I was going Freesat, and Eurosport Player for WSB, they offered the same service for £18, and without HD for £6.99

I've got the BT Infinity 2 package and not had any email yet of intentions to charge for BT Sport 2. I'm already saving more than £5 month with them for poor service I received when they installed it but would grudge having to pay them a penny more.

£60!!! Your getting robbed! I renewed my contract last Friday. Free evening and weekend calls £2.33, unlimited broadband £8.50 and monthly line rental (paid one year in full) circa £16.50.
No matter who you use as your provider, your line all depends on how far from the exchange you live. It won't change if you change your provider. I'm also getting free BT sports via an app on my iPad and PC.

Sorry, sam bird is right, virgin will offer faster line speeds if using their own network and not BT's

I understand with fiber connection, the run from the exchange to the distribution box near the residence is fiber and the short distance to the inside of the prop is copper hence the high speeds they claim.
MAybe this will resolve your poor 2.5meg speed issue
frankly you can do a lot better than £60pcm as others have suggested.

Yes thats correct. Basically Infinity Fibre is just bringing the exchange closer to your house by taking the Fibre to the Cab (Big Green Box) This is Known as FTTC. It can get some really good speeds but that all depends on how good the Copper cable from the Cabinet is to your Front Door. But this is also dependant on if your Exchange is Infinity Enabled, Not all exchanges are and that is why it is not offered to every household, BT do offer FTTP which is Fibre to the Premis but this is only available in certain areas (Mainly Cornwall and London at the Moment) This is actually Fibre from the exchange all the way to your door and can offer minimum of 120mbps up to (don't quote me here) 250mbps and if you go with the Business FTTP it is even higher!!

I'm in the same boat Tom. Just checked and had the same email. Also live in a rural area and can't get infinity as my exchange is too far away, even though it is enabled (has been for years) and paid for unlimited broadband for years. Crappy 2mb speed means I can't download anything decent on HD or movies etc. Openreach are hopeless and won't even talk to the public. ..My only hope is the copper cable is eventually upgraded..anyone know how this is done ? How is it replaced ?

I live in the middle of nowhere and just got Infinity. At the moment it is only giving us about 7 meg but that it still better than the 2 meg we used to get. BT are out to investigate today as they say we should get 27+ even though we are about 3/4 of a mile from the cabinet.

If you dig around you will find that BT won't give you fibre if it will give you less than 15 meg. You can no longer register for FTTP as BT have put it on hold and are not taking any more orders. When the did do it you had to take a 3 year contract and pay the installation costs which included an £x per metre for running the fibre from the cabinet to your premises, or in other words it could be thousands.

As for £60 I think they are majorly taking the piss. I used to pay under £30 a month for unlimited broadband and calls, and I'm in a market 1 area so everything in BT or someone's branding of BT.

If you can get fibre then BT isn't the only option as othrt providers like PlusNet, Sky etc will give you the same service.

Through BT's Network so will only ever be as good as what BT can offer, Plus if there is a fault on the line it takes longer to sort out as you have to contact your Service Provider who then contact BT and they end up being the Middle Man. Virgin is the Only Other Company with its Own Network.

It's nothing to do with the Exchange being too far away. The Idea of Fibre is to bring the Exchange closer to your Home. Your Cabinet (Green Box) is where all the Magic happens (Transferring Fibre to Copper) Your Exchange may be Fibre enabled but if the Cabinet isn't Fibre ready then that is what will stop you getting Infinity Broadband. The way to tell is you will have the standard Green Box for Copper then Next to it (or in at least 100m proximity) will be a bigger, taller green box. That is the box that the Fibre comes too and is now the "Exchange" and then it transfers onto the Copper network into the Standard Green Box then off to your House on a Copper Pair of Wires

I'm not very techy but I think if you have BT broadband (like me and Tom) you can still watch BT Sport (motogp) on your PC/ipad for free ?

There are 3 ways to watch BT Sport:
    1. On the Sky Digital Satellite Platform
If you have a Sky box and an active Sky viewing card, you can easily get BT Sport Pack. You don't even need to be a BT customer, but if you do have BT TV then BT Sport Pack is free & if you have BT Broadband then BT Sport pack is just £5 a month.
    2. On BT TV
Watch live sport on BT TV with a BT Infinity or BT Broadband package. And if you can get BT Infinity with BT TV, you can add BT Sport HD for a small monthly fee.
    3. On the BT Sport app and online player
As long as you've got broadband from BT, you can watch BT Sport on your PC, Mac, smartphone or tablet using the app and online player. You'll need to enter your BT ID to start watching.

BT Sport Pack is free for all BT TV customers, and it gives you:

    • All the games from Europe's Elite Club Competition
    • 38 exclusively live Barclays Premier League football matches, including 18 Top Picks
    • All 69 live Aviva Premiership Rugby matches
    • All the season's MotoGPTM races – live and exclusive
    • Live WTA tennis matches from 21 global tournaments
    • And much, much more
Yes, if you've got the right equipment at home to connect your PC, laptop, smartphone or tablet to your TV, then you'll be able to stream the app onto your TV. Alternatively, find out more about using Google Chromecast to watch BT Sport on your TV.

When they say connect your laptop and stream, do they mean wi-fi ? Not sure streaming would work as I only get 2 meg ish ?

Thats correct, But you need an Active subscription to BT sport for the App to work. Once it goes to £5 per month your BT Sport App will only allow you to watch whatever you are paying for on your Subscription. A Bit like SKY Go, you can't watch the Movies on SKY Go unless you have the Movies on your SKY package.

Thanks for explaining Sam. The "exchange too far away" is what I have always been told by BT when moaning at renewal time.
My exchange itself is in the nearest town, approx. 3 miles away, through forestry land. My cabinet is at my nearest neighbours property approx. 1 mile, again through forest. I have notice BT working there quite recently but I only see the one green box, I will check again later. My neighbours complain about broadband dropping out, however mine is stable (should be at these speeds LOL) but with a poor quality phone line.

I think this has spurred me on for a utilities purge, I'm paying not far off OPs bill and then there is bloody Sky as well !!

I can't send messages for some reason. Whats your Dialing Code or your Exchange Area (Town Name) and i will look to see if it is scheduled to be Infinity Enabled. Or if you know what green cab is yours look for a White Number on it and let me know that as i can then tell you if that cabinet is scheduled for an Upgrade

Painful price, just dumped Sky sports as it was a case of less for more, and renewed my BT Infinity 38 MB for a discounted price of £13 a month for 12 months, plus the line rental fee. Add another £3 for the BT HD and at £16 a month and consistent 37 Meg download appears to be a bargain to me.

Reduced to the Family bundle which they discounted to £21 a month for a year as a lot of the BT channels have to come in over an HD aerial
