Got to say I'm impressed with the rear shock. Ok not played with it much but for tourimng, track days and wkend blast it does a good job. So other than the bling factor why change it ? Thought its worth asking :)

It'd be worth swapping for me due to the weight issues I'm still 18stone in shorts n tshirt so with kit I'd say 20+ stone(god it'd have been 24-25 stone the start of the year).

Standard shock is for a 13 stone ish rider, first spend of the year for me is both bikes re sprung front and rear and fork service, that's £800 down the pan lol!

As you would expect Ohlins are always updating shocks and forks, BUT so do many other companies as thats just what you get when you have superbike kits fitted etc etc, the other companies often make better valves, adjusters, springs, shim stacks etc etc etc in order to tune what Ohlins sell.. Thats some of the problem with the OEM kits is there is only so much that you can do with it. The stock suss is very good no doubt as Honda have to give you something that works after all your riding there flag ship superbikes and it has to be half good but aftermarket forks and shocks are sooo much better and you will never know how much better until you ride on it.. I have Ohlins TTX and FGRT/FG forks on both my 848 and CBR, the CBR is a much better setup as the forks are tuned with superbike valves and springs light top out springs Ti internals and are setup for fast road, so they are plush but consistent, same with the TTX rear its revalved with Ti internals and set up for fast road and its super sharp all of the time.. The 848 on the other hand is sooo harsh I've got to rip it out and send off to be sorted as its just no use for fast road!

If you want proper bling check out this TT36LE

Standard shock is actually set up as oe for a 9st dripping wet jap, and Matt, once you start to push on, you realise why, for fast riding, the standard honda suspension is woefully undersrung.

Cant see the prices of current ttx36 shocks dropping, s this wont be considerably better, certainly not enough to drive the racer/td brigade to them as its only got what a properly set up 36mk1 has anyway

    'NURSE WETWIPES PLEASE'

I had an ohlins rear shock and Ktec rebuild on the front forks on the R1 and the difference (even to a average rider like myself) was instantaneous, smoother, predictable and confidence inspiring are three things I always seem to say when talking about it.

Coming from the R1 to the blade, it sounds stupid but I thought I was taking a step back the front just does not have enough adjustment and I dont feel like I always know whats happening with the rear of the bike, although I have to say the tyre wear looked spot on at cadwell.

I know very little about suspension setup and which is the best gear to buy, I will be the first to ask what to go for and will be asking arthur all I can next year when I have the funds to sort the bikes suspension out, maybe get the stuff from him and a visit to get it set up ???? Arthur ????

The only thing I do know for sure is it will be money well spent :)

Jamie your always welcome down mate or to chat by phone or email, I don't expect to sell anything to anyone but am happy to try and give advice free of charge mate over tea or whatever, I am just a one man Joe in a small workshop stuck in the woods in a small village, nothing big..bikes for me are one long learning curve I don't make big money from them and I do what I do as I love it.. :) I have some cool mates etc in the game too and when I am stuck or need advice I can turn to them for help, the likes of Dave at HM Racing, Francis Williamson the rider I supported in 09 and a big mate and many others...

Benn the first step with any bike mate is setup, that starts with springs and sag etc cheap things to get you in the ball park, its never a waist of money prob the best money you can spend, no point having 300bhp or whatever if your slower than my Zip round bends or down rough roads...lol

I think arthur will agree here...

If your buying new, its a minefield, it really is, so many choices and so many opinions lol.

if its new stuff your after, either the Bitubo Gas cartridge kit & rear shock or the Ktec SSK Fron cartridge kit matched with the new (and quite simply, amazing) DDS35 rear shock

The ohlins, as nice as shiny gold is, simply isnt the best stuff on the market anymore, and unless you have a factory ohlins deal in your pocket youll be paying over the odds for stuff.

I cant see it changing for a while either, certainly no major new suspension equipment, as they are concentrating on further development of the new mecatronic stuff as found on the Panigale, whilst Ktec, bitubo and the rest churn out new stuff on a regular basis.

Arthur/Craig, What sort of money should you be looking at parting with for a good fast road/trackday package ?

I am not a bothered by brand ohlins always look amazing but I want function over form if possible, however if its shiney and sexy to look at it always helps lol :)

I agree with CC and very true there are many other options and makes of suss to choose from, Ohlins is only one and with each there are many levels to go for, the race stuff is hardcore and needs constant maintenance for a start, you can spend anywhere from £1500 to £20,000.00 on a pair of forks and the 20granders need custom made yokes etc! same as brakes some people don't know they start around £800 and go to around £8,000.00 for a pair of calipers.. People ask me all the time where does it end? It ends with £3.5M RCV212V and a team that costs some where round 100M a year to run..lol

Jamie CC knows more of other options than me, but I would say you need some carts for the forks and a new rear shock that can be setup, price depends on where you go maybe to Kyle US and get carts and shock for around 2K inc tax etc..

    Almost certainly want Bitubo/Ktec.

Depends on what you want, a simple revalve/[iston kit with matched springs & oil is cheaper than a full cartridge kit, around 500 quid, and simply NO ONE does pistin kits better than KTEC, 20/25ssk would be a step in the right diection.

As for shocks, im split to recomend the KTEC DDS35 (porn) or the Bitubo (more porn) but i know what im choosing in 2012.

all in for shock & piston kit, brand spankers, anything between 1300-1700.
