I'd be lying if I said I did even a fraction of the work. The missus does. I do construction, demolision and heavy landscaping. The new wall around the lawn and the new patio came off the back of the builder making such a mess building the garage. There's at least that much space out the front of the house too.
Nice when you've got a missus to help. My girlfriend is a dab hand in the garden and has sorted out so much of mine. I do lawns and that's about the end of it.
It must a north of the river thing rich, my new house has a lawn, but needs some tlc. The previous house had half paving slabs and half nettles and brambles, so I want this one to be an oasis where I can chill. Though got the new bike shed to build yet..
I find it very relaxing and kinda therapeutic spending time sorting the lawn, and even longer standing back and admiring it, once it is as 'lush' as I was aiming for! Rich....you are not alone!
After 23 years of trying to row a decent lawn on the old Spen Dyke I gave up. Had a massive production going on, shifting 19 tones of shit out, and shipping another 10 tonnes back in. The results during and after.
The project was fuelled by Stella, party every night now it's done, but I was seriously beginning to question my sanity after day five of wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow of shite, day six to eleven was just putting pack together. I had red wine on those evenings
My new house had a reasonably lush rear lawn when I moved in, but 3 weeks of it being used as a builders storage area whilst more needy thing got built, ( man cave), it's looking very sparse and threadbare. Been looking at grass seed prices...it's stupidly expensive these days, I remember it used to be only around 10p a pound from allotment shops etc...now it's at least £1 a pound
I can honestly say No I have no interest in mowing. My wife is the one who liked to cut the grass during the day and does a nice job of it One this I do like to make sure we have is a good mower. I dislike flymows and rotary ones. Mainly as when I do cut the grass they do a horrid job and needs to be cut in a weets time. So always been a fan or cylinder mowers. Cut well and low. But getting so hard to find a non petrol one or one that costs £250 Plus.
I've got a pretty cheap Mountfield petrol rotary. Main things I've learnt this year are, Cut twice / week. Only remove a little each time you mow. Keep your blade sharp. Dull blades rip the grass rather than slicing it.
None a that expensive malarky for me....cheapest b&q leccy mower I can find then knowing what a bargain I've got I'm like a dervish whizzing over thistles, pebbles, hidden dog toys, the odd richard and anything else lurking out there The adrenaline rush of surviving with your eyes still intact is worth almost every penny
I Bought a 25 kg bag from pitchcare.com. This is a good place to buy, think it was around £65. Did over 300sqm and lots left. My advice is to buy the fleeces that go over the freshly seeded grass. I did that and had a lush new lawn in 2 weeks. I was quoted 2k to turf it and it cost about £125 to seed... More money for bike bits!
There we are...the £1 a pound grass seed and from a cheaper supplier.. The price is what it is these days I guess, but unlike other "commodities" it makes you wonder how they can justify the price over what it used to cost..it's not like modern grass produces gold flake when it's cut as opposed to old fashioned grass producing grass cuttings...
