Hi Folks, After recently spotting Lewis Hamilton in a rainbow race visor for his lid - thought it looked pretty cool & quite fancy getting one. I currently have an XR1100 Shoei with a clear visor. I have seen plenty of riders on the road with dark and/or other 'race' style visors. Never used one for the road but understand manufacturers say in big red ink - for race track only not for road use. I guess thats because visibility is poor or non-existent when dark. Also, is it illegal to use these 'race' style visors on the road. Do they greatly improve visibility in sunny conditions? Just wondered what peoples impressions of them are for road use. I currently wear a pair of Oakleys under my clear visor; but quite fancy getting a rainbow visor for my Shoei.
Cant answer the legality question but I wear a very dark visor on the road and never been tugged. My journey is east/west on the M4 so the sun is properly in you eyes in the morning/evenings. The dark visor deffo helps against glare. I find that sun glasses are a bit of liability especially if it is a little colder as they can mist up very easily,. I have to add I always carry a clear in the ruck sack when wearing it just in case the weather takes a turn or the night/evening catches up on me.
I've got the rainbow one on my 1100 & dark tint on the other they do the job in sunny conditions. No good when light fades you'll need a clear visor to pop in then. The iridescent one was expensive tho compared to dark tint & has scratched easier! Both block bright conditions out the same
imo shoei multicolor spectra visors are so mildly tinted, so in a daylight I wear sunglasses with my helmet. at the moment i have x-spirit 2 and spectra gold visor.
Tinted visors can get you in trouble with plod, but tinted pinlocks won't. I used to do the wear tinted but carry clear bit, but now my road visor has a flip down tinted bit.
Never had a problem with tinted visor even when pulled by the plod! The iridium visors do scratch easily though, looking at a transition visor myself
Always used a genuine shoei dark smoke , looks cool but if I know I'm gunna be back late I take a clear visor with me. Interesting to see the shoei transitions visor, and how dark it is in overcast conditions as well as bright sunshine. I believe @Gilesy has one Or is it @RRoss ?
I've never had a problem with the police when using a dark visor on a bright day,but for weekends away a tinted pinlock can easily be removed if required. Am now using a reactive pinlock on my AGV helmet and am so far impressed with the results. On my new NXR I bought the Transitions visor and it is great, optical quality is excellent, takes the pinlock max insert(you don't even notice it's there),goes nice and dark on a bright day, clear at dusk or dawn and although it still looks tinted on an overcast day visibility is still excellent
So it's not really very dark when it's over cast ? I'm wanting fairly dark when overcast but clear when dark conditions, got any pics of it in various lighting conditions @RRoss
I use a shoei tinted/dark smoked visor most of the time. It's pretty good in most conditions, even in dark clouds it doesn't affect my judgement or riding in any way. And it looks fookin ace!
I'll try and get some pics in various light conditions, being up in Scotland tho a bright sunny day may be difficult
Where did you get your transition one from. Done a google search for transition visor for my XR1100 & haven't came across anywhere who sells them.
That's not strictly accurate RRoss. The transitions visor is a cw-1 visor, which is shared by many Shoei designs (same shape & size). Its possible that the XR1100 also has the cw-1 visor.
I stand corrected. I'm thought however the visors (inc transitions) for my NXR & GT-air were interchangeable; I will double check.
