Ok, so got the blade booked in at Kent motorcycles in Canterbury (thanks KentBlade!). Spoke to a really helpful guy there & advised me that it would be a waste of money to do the valve check at 16K. My bike is way out of warranty & running really sweetly.

Mine is also now due (according to the manual anyway) so have been looking in to doing it myself.

Had a flick through the service manual and while the actual checking process seems straightforward enough, the amount of deconstruction involved looks a little scary.

I thought it would be a case of drop the oil, tank off, connectors and airbox off, cam cover off and away you go, but the manual seems to suggest that in addition to that little lot you also need to drop the radiator (and presumably the fluid?), side fairings, and other bits and bobs including having the tool for the CCT (but not entirely sure why?)

I know my way around a spanner so am not particularly afraid of a job like this, and am not one to cut corners either, but am wondering how much CYA there is in the manual vs. what one actually needs to do?

CCR32, there is a lot to do to check the valve clearances but it is well worth doing yourself as you will be able to check out/clean other things at the same time.

If you have full service history and it is due i would get it done so that you have the stamp saying its been done, for the extra £200 odd over the price of a normal service you will get that back when you come to sell it as people will rather buy a bike that has proof its been done at 16k over one that hasn't and you can charge that bit extra in the sale price. I just sold my GSXR and the ammount of people that asked about the Valve clearences was unreal! everyone knows its a big one and can be expensive (Touching £500 on GSXR's if they all need shimming) so i lost at least 3 potential buyers as it was getting close to 30k miles and they said it would need doing again very soon.
I went into my Local Dealer yesterday as mine is due it's 8k service in the next Month and i also asked about the 16k service as i reckon i'll need it within a year and they said it will be between £300 & £400 (if it needs Shims)

That is really useful, as I'm near there and was looking for a place to take mine :)

Spoke to my local Honda dealership and they are quoting £450+VAT for a 16k service, and they said that bill is likely to go up too if they find other things whilst doing it... Gulp!

My 16k service is due on my RR9. I am no way spending £450 + vat!

    Are there any other alternative?

Just done oil and filter change last week..

Yes. Don't bother lol ... Or check them yourself.

I won't be bothering with the 16k check as it will have spent the last 13k miles mostly on the motorway at 80mph :)

I'd only do the 16k check if the bike spent a lot of time on track.

Mine too has just had a late 12000 mile service at 14000 miles by Chelmsford Honda, and now its at 15000 miles. I'm not overall worried about having my 16K one now, as it really soon. Mine is a toy and used for fast road, and no track stuff, so I might wait til nearer 20K to have it done. I can work on engines but don't fancy taking my bike apart. Way to fiddly unlike a car..

Hi all! I picked up the blade from kent motorcycles on Monday after dropping back their loaner bike (Honda NC750X - weird). The lads down there are really helpful! The service came to just over £400 including brake pads all round, 4 new plugs, air filter, oil & filter, full brake fluid change (C-ABS) & a stamp in the service record.
I know £400 is a lot of money but for the time & parts they put in, I wasn't complaining.
The difference in the braking is amazing!

    That's really good to hear.

The history on mine had been allowed to lapse, and was self serviced by the previous owner, so I want the full job done, and a stamp for piece of mind.

I finally got around to going down to Kent Motorcycles today, (after flying past it the first time).

Spoke to Craig who seemed a very nice guy, told him what I wanted, and he said if I was in no desperate rush they could give me a better deal on labour when things have slowed down at the end of Oct, so it is booked in for the 20th October.

He put me down for a loan bike there and then.

I really liked the place, nice atmosphere, and a dangerous spattering of things to impulsively waste my money on :D

Hi Nytol, any idea when a brand new bike should have its 1st service? I've just gone over 800 miles and some people say it needs doing. Surely this isn't right? I was thinking around the 3000 mile mark.

Didn't realise that, someone in work told me It needed doing but I didn't believe him. Can I just drop the oil and change it myself and change the filter at the same time or do I need to book It in?

I'd get the 1st stamp in the book personally as it's the most important one. Most dealers will charge you £100 for the privilege though.. after that it's 8000 miles or 12 months.

Bill Smiths in Chester will do a minor service for £145. That's some money for a quick oil change. Is the 1st stamp worth that much if I buy the oil and filter and keep the receipts as proof?
