Neutral light wont go out

I have a 2007 HRC Blade which has always been running perfectly. I was out on it all day Sunday and did over 300 miles with no issues. I then washed it and parked it up.

When i took it out today the neutral light stays on even in all gears!! When i started her again the rev needle was also bouncing around..

Any ideas??

 

First thing I'd check would be the cable going into the back of the dash is secure. You might be able to do it without undoing anything but would be simpler to remove the screen.

 

Yes i took the screen off had a check and all looks secure behind there

 

If you've checked that plug is secure, there is another huge plug just below the left headlight... need to remove the left fairing.

Failing that, it really will be a case of checking every little connection, and maybe squirting some WD40 into the connector blocks to repel any water that may have got in there.

Strange thing is, if i have it in say first gear and wheel it forwards or backwards the light goes off at a constant distance of movement - roughly every 2cms i move..

 

check the wiring onto the switch ,if you pull the wire off the light should go out ,unless there is a short to earth,also remove the neutral switch and check the plungers not sticking,it basically works by earthing out in neautral.

 

Mrs' Ducati shows neutral in all gears apart from neutral when it occasionally lights up and the oil light very often joins the neutral light (think it feels a bit left out). But it is a Ducati! Was a bit worrying at first but just ignore it now.

 

I take it there's no handy way to get at the switch without taking the tank etc off?

 

I had a similar problem with my old R6. The neutral switch was knackered.

I tried cleaning and WD40-ing it. Didn't work. I ended up replacing it. No problems after that.

 

Also, would the neutral switch cause the rev needle to bounce around?

When I turn the key in the ignition, the rev check completes correctly and returns back to zero but when I start the bike and put it in gear it then has a mind of its own!

 

Does sound like you've got a loose connector. Perhaps the engine vibrations are wobbling it once the engine's started?

 

No all is well once its in neutral, it's only when the bike is in gear. I'll maybe just wait till I get the connections and switch checked first

 

Looking at the wiring diagram there isn't much in the circuit apart from the switch itself and a diode block located near the fuses. If you take the wire off the neutral switch and deck the wire to earth/negative the light should go out.

 

Here's the service manual instructions from an 04-05, basically says same as I did above. As for the rev counter it just says to check the power to the dash.

 

I checked the plug to the lower left of the headlight and it resolved the issue!! All good as new again! I knew it had to be something simple the bike has never given me one bit of trouble since I bought it.
