Hi guys, Can anyone here trace a bike reg number if I supply the vin number? Or know someone that can?. Recently bought a project bike but unsure if the number plate in the box of bits is the right one for it! Thanks
Write to DVLA with a letter explaining why you require the details (making sure that you include all the info such as Reg No, make and model), include the payment (which used to be £3, and providing your reasons are valid, you will get a print out of the vehicles history. You coud go to the Post Office and ask for (I believe) a form VQ2 which is the same as the letter. If approved, it takes about 3 weeks to get a response.
Thanks guys, I wasnt sure if someone in the motor trade could do history checks on chassis numbers. I do have an old style v5 as the bike was sat in a shed for 15 years! I sent the v5 off and they,ve come back wanting photos of the frame number which ive sent off. just wondered why they asked for that and whats the reason for it.
It's possible that the engine might have been changed hence asking for frame number to match up or was written off for some reason! Owner should have had new style v5 and when they changed they sent out to everyone
I worked at Vauxhall a few years ago. On one of the systems they used to check for Recalls, you could enter a chassis no and it would give you the reg no. You could try a Dealer of the manufacturer of the bike to see if it's on their system.
I wouldn't hold out much hope of getting any joy from the DVLA. Over the last week or so I have been in the process of negotiating and concluding the sale of my Ducati and purchase of two Honda's. During the process the Honda dealer called and said that the " well known outstanding finance and vehicle check company" they use had confirmed the Ducati was fine but had alerted that my private registration had been fitted to a car that had been written of back in 2008 !!!! interesting as I have owned that plate for probably the last 30 years and it was never fitted onto said written off vehicle. I called "the well known outstanding finance checker" who couldn't be bothered to look into it and referred me to the DVLA. When I called the DVLA they were even less helpful and blamed the outstanding finance checker. And round the phone calls went. Neither even trying to understand let alone help resolve the problem. As originally planned, I transferred the private plate onto a retention certificate, all done online these days for £80 and two minutes keyboard clicking. Well done DVLA I thought and within two days my new V5C arrived along with the retention certificate. All good you might think........... It then turned out DVLA records for outstanding finance and vehicle checking company access only update on a rolling 4 week cycle meaning whilst the Honda dealer can now see that the private plate issue has cleared, we now a new problem as the vehicle doesn't show any registration even though I have the new V5C.......FFS........ Long and frustrating story short.......The Honda dealership kicked off big time and finally "said outstanding finance checker" updated the records based on the new V5C and also removed the incorrect history attached to my private plate. Result. but what a load of needless problems caused by our 'face less computer says' world. Honda dealer now has a line of green lights on their form and the deal is going ahead.
