Hi all I got a new chain and sprocket kit yesterday. I went for the 520 -1/+1 renthal sprockets and EK chain. The question I have is I've fitted it and set the rear wheel back to roughly where it was when it was new and the chain is roughly 3 links too long. Is this normal?? I was going to chop a link out at time and test it but I thought I'd ask just in case.
What are you talking about??? That picture shows he has a 43tooth rear and 15tooth front sprocket! Renthal part numbers go bike fitment type number (spline type or stud pattern) then pitch in this case 520 then the tooth number followed by a P in the above case 15P and 43P.
The extra chain links can be the seller making sure you have enuff links to allow proper fitment especially if the gearing is being altered from stock, chain sprocket sets where stock gearing is used I have found have always came to me without the need to touch the new chain and can be riveted straight on. But when gearing differed from stock I have had to remove chain links in order to allow enuff adjustability from the chain adjusters to allow the new chain to fit properly. What I will say tho is remove the links one at a time as it can be deceptive just holding the chain up and thinking yeah I will need n# links removed only to find you have removed too much and then need to try and get hold of another rivet link in order to finish the job.............yeah I have been there before not a good feeling!
I think the 2004-2007 bikes had 114 links standard and 2008 models on are 116 links. Just a thought as not knowing which bike you have. Do you have correct chain?
Thanks for your help guys. I'm going to remove 1 link at a time and see how it goes. I will throw a pic up when I've completed it.
