Hi guys! Finally managed to get out on the bike earlier with a mixture of mainly dry and damp roads. Tyres felt great but the new shiny rubber was always in the back of my head! How many miles realistically should I do before I can push it a little? Cheers
Just had new boots fitted myself, asked the same question and Powerlinks shop boss told me 75 very careful miles. He knows I'm a rookie though.
never thought twice about new tyres, rode them gently for about fifty miles leaning a little more each time. That is until last year when highside on newish tyres, problem was the weather was shite during the run in so didn't really get them to the edges even after 100 miles, bad road surface didn't help much either Wondering if there is more mechanical way to scrub them ie combo of tyre warmers and belt sander!
Yes, I've always wondered if there was a way to get rid of that sheen! Hot sunny days are great but dull dampish days are not ideal!
Stay off A roads that may hold the damp head for a dual carriageway Or motorway with good exit slip roads then go up and down gradually leaning further the heat from the straight Run should hold you when you get to the bends but gentle on the throttle not a big handful
I get new tyres about every 4 months & regardless of time of year I do a steady 100 on them up & down the bypass, round & round the roundabouts & a whiz over the peaks...job sorted
These days the tyres are remove from the moulds with compressed air so no relaase agent issued, you do not therefore need to scrub the tyres in just bed them into to rims, they recomend 100 miles but 50 will do fine and the grip is there from the off.
100 miles is just a convenient number that has no real basis; when I was working on the Continent they used to say 100km. Just take it easy at first and then use common sense.
It's heat you need not a number of miles. They will grip if they are warm enough not if the surface has been 'roughed up'.
Depends on the condition of the road. if your riding around at this time of year it's going to take longer to scrub in. Wet, cold roads are not good. Best set I scrubbed in was in the summer. Went out for a blat over wales when it was hot and dry. used most of the rear within 40 miles. And felt planted after around 20 miles. But have done the same in the past when it was wet and cold and took over 100 miles as I personally did not feel that confidant on new tires in through conditions.
