If you are the owner of a 2015 Yamaha YZF-R1 of YZF-R1M, your motorcycle might be part of an upcoming “stop sale” recall that affects the bike’s gearbox. The soon-to-be-announced recall affects only a limited number of units, but centers around the gearbox on some R1’s having components of inadequate strength, which could cause the transmission to seize under extreme shifting, and thus result in a crash. According to our sources, the recall focuses on the second-gear wheel and pinions, which might break under extremely high stress and/or improper shifting. This is due to inadequate component strength and stress concentration at the bottom land for the gear teeth. In addition to second-gear wheel issue, the third and fourth-gear wheels may also be deformed or break, again as a result of hard usage, and again due to inadequate component strength. Yamaha is expected to formally announce this recall some time this week, and clarify which VINs are affected. It is not clear at this point how Yamaha will remedy the situation for owners, but the recall is expected to take place in mid-December. In the past, other manufacturers have had factory technicians rebuild defective motors, while others have simply swapped affected motors with new ones. The latter seems the more likely solution, as it has fewer legal consequences. Source: Bothan Spies
That's a bit worrying, I'm all geared up to buy a new 2015 R1.. I hope they release the vins soon so i can find out if my bike is affected, a bloody worry, blasting round a track and worrying about a gearbox locking up at 170mph Come on Mr Honda get the new blade so i can stay here
Cheers for the heads up jay I'll update you on this.. Already had the ball rolling for a few days because of rumours on Facebook.Due to speak to Tamworth yam today with my chassis number for the m.There's been 2 around the world which have locked up that they have heard off so pretty low average really when you think of how many gearboxes are failing on the kwacks and blades .. Probbably down to a jap having a bad shift with a hangover on the rice wine..Milwaukee have ran a standard box all year with no issues .
Not the sort of thing new owners want to hear when they've just spent 15k + on a new bike! Although fair play to Yamaha for addressing the problem and being proactive with the recall. It seems like some of the other manufacturers like to deny all knowledge when it comes to dodgy gearboxes.
i think me/glynn are the only people that actually want it to be recalled, will save a lot of hassle.....
it's a long story but with glynn's engine issue a new engine under warranty/recall will make life a lot easier (and cheaper i suspect),better for me as i wont have to fit a new engine to the bike, and everything else that goes with it
Would be nice if Yam uk got off their butts and gave a proper release about this with vins of the effected bikes? Is it all R1's from start to end of 2015, or just some? we need to know
All being recalled . its a precaution so FairPlay Yamaha. My r1m is being done. dropping it off Saturday
Best to cancel my order then and await a 2016 one I guess shame because I had got £1500 off the list price on this R1,.but not sure I want a "fixed" one rather than brand new from.the factory
Doubt it will make any difference. There will be thousands of bikes already made that will have the 2nd and 3rd gears replaced .. 1500 off is a big saving . Well worth taking I think
Yam have quoted 15.8 hours to replace the affected parts, of which there are many. Keep the boys in the workshop busy for the next few weeks.
Yep my mate got the call a few days ago! he's gutted but what can you do? Spending all that money and then having some greasy mechanic pull the engine and split the thing in two....
Some greasy mechanic put it together in the first place just fine.... Wouldn't bother me at all, least Yama are doing something about it, Honda pretend their abs is faultless. Besides if you bought one for track then it'd need a refresh in a couple of years and would be split and put back in anyway? Doesn't ever do an engine any harm.
