If Fuel economy is a requirement then the BiTurbo Vivaro or Trafic is the one to go for. The Tranny uses the much bigger 2.2dci engine that as an Owner points out above struggles to top 30mpg A mate who runs a new 1.6 120bhp BiTurbo Trafic gets 40+ all day long, ya can 'Map em' to 170 bhp too if ya want more. Panels are wafer thin on the Tranny so don't take much to dent etc
Motorpoint do new vans cheap ish e.g. http://www.motorpoint.co.uk/used-ca... model]/sl27 energy dci 120 business plus van
Not by much though which is kind of why I said its terrible. You ain't exactly getting the performance of a RB320 but not far of the fuel cost.
Ieamr in ref to the scooby performance..... Granted not great, but it's a van not a motor.... Pretty sure daves vw ain't much better than 30mpg and I bet the traffic isn't far off, despite what brochure claims.....
I get around 42mpg in my old Vivaro mate and it got 140k miles on the clock. Dave will be getting around 38mpg in his van. Well maybe if he doesn't kick its cunt in everywhere lol
Didn't I read in GM's latest book (which incidentally I found a bit boring. I did however, like the his description of his best shit in the woods) that he didn't like to sporty transit and he wanted a "proper" one, I think he gave the pimped one to his sister. I don't think 40 miles per gallon out of a van is bad, I didn't get anywhere near that out of my 1199 Panigale and it only had my lardy arse to drag around.
The pimped up one in the photo isn't the one I saw him in at the TT. That was a standard black transit with his skull and crossed spanners logo on the top of the back panel.
I drive a new shape Transit for work and the MPG is appalling, 25-26 mpg at best. We all get about the same readings, about 440 miles to a tank. They have the 6 speed box but, believe it or not, the MPG gets worse in 6th than 5th. It's also really. really gutless. The company run a fleet of them all brand new, 60% have had major issues within 6k. My van randomly loses power when pulling away in first and will stall. Below 2k revs it has no go, forever dropping it down the box to get it up on song, can be cruising at 70 in 6th, hit a slight incline and it slows down, similarly if you come off the gas if someone changes lane up ahead, down into 5th to get it back up to speed. I have an 05 Transit of my own, and it would eat my work van for breakfast and it's got 170k on the clock. I think that most of the major fleet runners, BT, RAC, British Gas even the Police have moved away from running the Transit speaks volumes TBH I dare say, if you buy a sportline or other top of the range tricked out version Transit, it'll mostly be a different ball game, but the lower end run of the mill vans are not a patch on their ancestors. Next year I'm thinking of a Vito, VW or the 06-10 Transit for an upgrade
That is the major concern for me the MPG with the new transit. I'd be looking at the sport with 155bhp so don't think I'd get the issues in regards to it being gutless. I'll make sure I get a good test drive of 1 before I even think of parting with my cash.
Couldn't agree more. I too have the latest Transit Custom, and to make matters worse it's restricted to 70mph and still does under 30mpg average. On the plus side I gotta say it's nicely kitted out and very comfortable to drive.
Not always mate. I've had around 30-40 cars and agree some can just be thirsty regardless of what power/engine is in them, though I tend to find that more powerful or larger engined cars can actually be better for motorway speeds as the engine isn't as laboured and is basically cruising.
True, I had an Audi A3 TDi that I had remapped, custom turbo and the biggest injectors that could be fitted, went from 130 - 180 BHP but was more economical..only about another 5-8 mpg but it was an added bonus. IMO, the issue with the new vans is trying to meet emissions regulations and are detuned that far that the engine is stifled, which is actually counter productive as they get driven harder for longer in lower gears, so the emissions are still going to be high. On motorway driving, which I do a fair amount of, I very rarely use 6th, nearly always in 5th, and 4th for overtaking lorries etc to keep the turbo spooling above that critical 2k rpm, anything below that and the throttle pedal feels like squeezing a deflated football, no response at all.
