I'm onto my 3rd chain tool here and it seems like I've hit paydirt!! My first was an eBay DID knockoff which lasted for 1 use before the arms of it spread. The second was a Sealey jobbie which was an utter POS and resulted in me overpressing the plates and gave a slightly tight link which meant I had to do it again This time I bought an AFAM Easy Riv 5 and it was brilliant. Really easy to use and cheap too! You do need to bear in mind that it doesn't break chains. Only presses the plates and rivets (only hollow DID / AFAM style rivets). This being the one........

I know this is an old thread but some info on the AFAM tool. This can push the side plate on too far and cause a tight link, as the back side of the tool is only 1 link wide pulling the farthest away plate towards you. So go easy when pushing on the side plate. A little at a time and compare the width of your joining link with the other links. But a great little tool! Just grind off the heads of your old joining link and force it apart to remove your old chain.
I've got one of these and there brilliant! £20 from demon tweets. I measured the width of one of the other links with a vernier calliper and just checked it every turn I gave. Easy as that
I'm getting one of these for the next time I fit a chain. Will take View attachment 37604 The part in the instruction video that's misleading due to it pulling the other plate towards you. Your method of a little at a time and taking measurements is defiantly the way to do it.
