I,m trying to set up a lappy after doing a re-install of windows XP.............managed to install the drivers for the wireless bit but I,ve hit a brick wall as I can see my connection, its good, tried to connect but all its doing is "Aquiring Network address"! and not connecting?,it keeps asking me for a WEP number/code or WAN??? WTF is that all about? As you can tell I have limited putor know how so if anyone can shed some light on the subject would be great! My wireless router is an N+Belkin type.
The WEP code is the security access code to allow you into the router. If you dont know what it is, try looking on the router itself. It is usually on a sticker. If not, you will have to look at your paperwork that came with the router. If you still have another PC on the network and know the router logon details you should find the code in there
Tried the numbers on the base......no joy. Theres a WAN MAC number A serial number PIN code number LAN/WLAN MAC number? There must be a better way of doing this!!
Your going to need to find either the WEP or the WPA number to continue, mate. Like Steve said, if it's not printed on the router itself it must be with the original paperwork. Sorry, but even if you want to change it to an easier to remember pass key, you're going to need the original one first.
Yep with out that WEP key your going Nowhere As Ken said , If its not on the router then it will be on a card in the paper work normally What Router is it out of interest ?
you could try logging onto the router if you have another pc connected. If you have, try the following: 1. open your web browser. 2. in the address bar type 192.168.0.1. If nothing happens try 192.168.1.1 3. this should bring up the router logon screen asking for username and password. Unless they have been changed they are usually "admin" for both. If not try admin for username and "password" for password. If this gets you in, go to the wireless section and you should see the WEP key.
pretty sure you can use the pin code number aswell or at least connect and enter the pin - will see if I can remember where
Thanks guys.................sorted......................I found the original disc for the Belkin router, installed and then headed for the spec bit............yep there it was.
Just as a wee side note ... you should maybe be using WPA2 rather than WEP if you have that option in your router .... WEP is about as secure as a wet paper bag
