Just wondering, if you leave your bike idle without riding it, how long before the battery is too weak to start it? Mine does not last very long and its annoying. I dont ride my bike that often - and I have a datatool alarm also, so it runs down quickly - usually about a week. I'm wondering how long its supposed to last and should I take the alarm out? I cant use a trickle charger as there is no power in the underground carpark where I keep it.
I had no alarm on my Blade and after 2 weeks would be dead. So always kept it on a optimate and never a issue after
My other bike, Fazer Fz1s last used in October ,come march I tried it and first time it started,,i swear by them Motobatt yellow ones .lol. I think the blade battery maybe a bit smaller.
Mine has got datatool alarm and it lasted over 1 month once, but normally had it connected to an optimate so battery was in good condition. Even then OEM battery started to die after 18 months and replaced it with a lithium. There is an option to put alarm into winter mode so it draws virtually no current. That way you still have the alarm for when out and about.
There Is a school of thought to only put optimate on for short top up periods. My motorbike shop says they sell a good few new batterys to bikers early season after winter ,who have had the optimate on all winter,,,some batterys do not like the constant charge, small or not
Parked mine up in August and started it this week no problems. I did have an issue every couple of days but upgraded my battery to a motobatt
Leave mine for about 3 wks then our optimate on it , going to work in Saudi soon but will be home every 10 wks so will have it plugged it otherwise I think it will drain right down,,,
I have my bike and scooter hooked up to Optimate's at all times in the garage. My scooter is 10 years old and still on the original battery ( I even used to use heated gear on it ). Since I gave up work 4 years ago the scooter has only been filled with fuel about 6 times but still starts first time, every time so I think you're bike shop is talking.......
Took my SPS lithium ion battery out over October last year and measured 13.83V and 13.78 when I put it back on 4 months later! Running them in both bikes now... No issues
I flattened my battery once by turning ignition on and then spending to long talking before I hit the start button. It was a bitch to bump....took it for a 10 min ride and it was perfect again. Didn't stop the missus buying me an Optimate for Xmas though... BTW, Optimates do not continuously charge, they charge and then monitor, only charging again if the battery voltage goes down, if it has to do this too much it will tell you the batterys fooked. I cant vouch for all of the battery conditioners out there but I know my Optimate does not charge all the time.
I dont have an alarm or anything else drawing current when the bike is parked up and it'll start after a couple of weeks but I don't leave it longer than that without connecting the charger. Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
I,ve had more than 1 battery fail after spending a few months on the optimate so occasionally they can damage them. only know will switch it on a few days every month the disconnect again after. no problem since.
you now have all the different scenarios. There is no one rule all depends on age and use of the battery. the OEM Yuasa on 2008> is so little and light (also used on 125's) is can easily miss-perform. I was going to suggest a solar trickle charger but since your location is underground, this won't work. Sounds like you need a high capacity battery to cope with the current drai, specially if you have a third party alarm fitted. Unfortunately, lithium batteries although offer you better starting power (not cold temperatures) have actually low capacity (ah). Higher capacity = larger size cells = larger battery. How about getting yourself a car/caravan battery (40ah plus) and connecting it to your main battery (like a charger via a cable)? without additional current drain (e.g alarm and other accessories) the standard battery should fire up the bike without a problem after a 10~14 days period. Also find out if the alarm has a hybernate mode. Alternatively you can look at self powered devices that detect movement on the bike and send you an altert on your mobile. IT is all good fun I guess
