I see in the owners book that at 12k the head stock bearings should be removed, checked and re-packed with grease. Shopping about I see that upgraded bearings are available, taper roller bearings as opposed to ball bearings, which I know from experience are far more reliable and durable. Has anyone fitted these also, what are the head stock bearings like to either do as in re-pack with grease or change. I am thinking that if I'm already stripping the bike down that far, I might as well fit new bearings, (standard or upgraded), in any case.
I'd be fitting new bearings mate as you say your already in there. Allsballs racing headstock bearings is the way to go. Don't cost much either.
Are those the tapered ones that they list on eBay Colin?? If so I've already got them on my watch list, as you say they are reasonable on price
Headstock bearing really should be replaced every 10,000 miles as they take all the loadings from the front end.
Every 10k miles seems a bit excessive to me. The service schedule advises to inspect the head bearing every 8k miles.
