I have a Sthil saw that does that occasionally and it's almost always the piston rings.

Nightmare - an engine will be around £1,250 plus time / labour to swap out

I may have parts if you go the rebuild / repair route.

You (and I hate to write this) find it more financially viable to split and break the bike if you don't have 'mates rates' / skill to do the repair / engine swap.

    Wheels £500
V5 / log book and frame are £1,500
    ecu and lockset £300
tank is worth a bit then lights , bodywork, clocks

Another possible option might be to trade it with Yorkshire Gooner (Mark) for a cat D or C bike of and put your good bodywork / lights etc. on a crashed one - worth a chat with him , PM me if you need his email address / phone number

Doesn't it need reboring afterwards ?

My old TS100 broke the pistons rings - made a mess of the piston with great big tramlines gauged into the side and it needed reboring afterwards. I suppose because it was a single cylinder it pretty much came to a stop by the side of the road, whereas a multi I suppose you can keep going if it is only one cylinder affected.

I am not an expert mechanic, and I am not sure if it is always the case, but when my piston rings went on the little Suzi, it needed reboring.

Sorry to hear of the broken bike fella. Not a nice feeling I bet. But out of curiousity, what would cause such a catastrophic failure? Lack of oil??
