Today I fitted my new lightech chain adjusters, following the rather basic instructions. Seemed simple enough. Upon removing the rear axle I found the following article on the ground (please see attached), which looks rather like a spacer to me.

Assuming this part wasn't needed and not seeing an obvious place to fit it, I finished installing the chain adjusters and all seemed well.

However, when I torqued the rear axle nut beyond anything pathetic like 70NM, I could not get the rear wheel to rotate at all. The book says 113NM is required, so I've definitely done something wrong here.

Everything seems sensible, and when torqued correctly the chain is tensioned correctly with slack in it, and the only thing I can think of is that this part I've attached a picture of is critical. But if so, where does it live because I couldn't see an obvious place for it.

Thanks kindly. I can't even take the bike to the garage at the moment because it's probably unsafe to ride.

That's a wheel spacer and should be on the wheel

Mate that's the left hand side wheel spacer. That needs to go on the left side and you put the axle through that and the wheel.

I reckon this part is something called the 'shouldered spacer' and if I'm correct it's definitely a necessary part!

Would my stupidly not having fitted this explain why the wheel seizes when the axle nut is torqued?

Go to the fowlers website. It will show you the location of your missing part.

Cheers guys. I appreciate the help. I really hope that when I refit this tomorrow and torque the axle nut the problem with the wheel being stuck will have gone.

Just want to say thanks to you guys that helped yesterday. I removed the axle and refitted it with the spacer in the correct place and all works perfectly now. Wheel rotates at correct torque and adjusters are so useful. Thanks again.

Bit late to this conversation..... fitted the Lightech chain adjusters myself a few weeks ago and also fitted captive spacers at the same time..... handy little things :)

Captive spacers are wheel spacers that don't fall out when you take the wheels off the bike
