Hi, I had read about the 08 model using high amounts of oil but hadn't realised mine was too. Not sure how much, but definitely a lot more than it should when I'm on the track. Any suggestions??
i am affraid as sps mentioned honda says 1L/1000m ( or km?) but i guess if you are at this level you can make a fuss (worth a try) What i would say is make sure the engine is not overfilled.it take just over 150ml to go from min to max on the stick! (small cup of tea?)
I once measured the oil quantity (after an oil+filter change) I put in my engine and here is what I got: - 2.6~2.7L just about brought the level to the bottom of the dip stick - 70 ml took the level to the minimum mark - 100~150 ml took me from min to max Also important is how you you allow the oil to drain. A quick oil change could easily leave 100ml (or more?) of un-drained oil (I leave the oil to drain for 2~4 hrs). If you've been putting 500ml from min, you have been overfilling! your poor engine- according to my figures
I got the info from here, which says 2 people measured and theHRC Kit Setup manual also states 500ml so unsure why the difference TBH How much oil? From min to max dipstick level : Honda CBR 1000RR Motorcycle Forums: 1000RR.net
Yeah will do. Worrying thing is if your bikes uses the 1000ml per 1000 mile which Honda deem the acceptable limit you could easily be right of the scale and low oil level in a days riding covering 350 miles.
Always found Honda's attitude to this a tad strange..... 1 litre per 1,000 miles.... so if you use your bike as your main transport and travel to work and back covering say 10,000 miles a year ! So its ok for a bike to need 10 litres of oil every year, on top of the standard 4 litres (ish) of oil in the annual service, 14 litres a year ! Although i am sure there is a school of thought to say that it should already have had enough clean oil through it. Its old but this is still funny - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDsgLBkybP8
Quite agree with Hudson on Hondas take on the oil consumption. In the States there was a call back as they fitted the wrong piston rings, yet in the UK it was Ok for Litre per 1000miles. My 07 engine did not consume any oil at service intervals like all the previous blades.
What is worth noting that these litre motors are much more powerful than previous blades with a significant issue the pistons travel is ally all part of the crankcase and not in steel liners. From 2008 on the pistons were much lighter where a large percentage of owners reported heavy oil consumption.
My 14 blade goes from max to min about every 2-300 miles. My previous bike didn't use any oil at all. Now I'm unsure whether to add 150ml or 500ml to take it up to max. I guess I'll start at 250ml and see how that goes. I'm glad I checked actually, I thought it was 1L from min to max...
okay now I'm a little confused... I checked my oil this morning; started the engine let it warm up to 78C, let it sit and the oil was right at the min mark. So I went to the Honda garage to get some top up oil... when I got back I let the bike sit for about 30mins or so and when I checked it, it was slightly above the max mark... which reading is correct?
The manual states to leave it 2 to 3 minutes after warming up the engine before checking level. After 30 minutes I guess there will be a little bit more oil drain back into the sump.
unless the engine sump/ oil level / dipstick is different to mine (2008 model), then 150ml should take you from the min to max markers; anything more is burnt off. I tend to keep level at halfway point and probably use <100ml/ 1000 miles
