abs wheels vs non abs

    Hi all,

    My bike is a 2011 ABS, which I'm trying to keep as close to standard as possible. I'm in the market for a set of wheels to use for wets. I recently found a rear on ebay for £100 (bare). After a quick Q&A with a forum member and under the impression that the ABS ring fits to the disc, I smashed the "buy it now" button, then tracked down the necessary disc and ABS ring required. Now it's all arrived, the ABS ring fits to the wheel on the rear, unlike the front.

    I found a thread that confirms the rear is specific to the ABS model. So here I am, feeling like a plank for being too hasty, impulse buying never solved anything.

    Can anyone suggest a solution? The thread I read mentioned something about a possible drill & tap the ABS bolt holes but I'd imagine the difference in the wheels is more than 4 extra holes?

    I would like to avoid removing the ABS since I'm trying to keep it as is (I know it gets a bad rep but I haven't experienced the issues some have had.....yet!). BUT I will do it if someone can point me to a how to and can highlight the potential issues like fault codes etc

    Failing any solution I'll just get rid and watch out for ABS specific, which seem to be hard to find

    Nope,

    You have already answered your own question.
    The only difference is the bolt holes to hold the speed ring in place, front is identical for both abs & non-abs models as the speed ring is integrated into one of the discs.

    Thanks for the reply.

    If the bolt holes are the only difference, is it possible to drill & tap them? or would that be asking for trouble? (I've never heard it being done before)

    Simple answer is anything is possible, A good friend of mine had exactly the same experience, He purchased some BST carbon wheels that were supposed to be off an ABS model, They turned up and guess what .... No mounting point on the rear hub. I mocked up a rear ABS ring to fit the hub, it required some machined spacers and also for the Hub to be drilled and tapped. My friend ended up bailing on the wheels in the end so I never got to complete the modifications. The BST hubs are machined from solid billit so quite easy to find solid ground to drill and tapp as the OE mounting bolts are only M3's and around 6mm in depth. Problem Is the OE wheels are cast and on the ABS model the wheel has a machined face ready to except the ring. Also the Big contributing factor is the measurements need to be bang on as you have very little air gap between ABS sensor and the ring itself. If you look on your original setup your see what I mean. The Sensor is almost touching the ABS ring, There is a required air gap to maintain the right pick up. To little and you won't have the clearance, to much and the sensor won't pick up the signal required and your end up with ABS dash light on.

    Thanks Dave, great info there.

    It sounds like it's going to be more hassle than its worth, especially with machining spacers etc, as I have no experience with it. I spoke to our mechanic today at work and he says his mate may be able to tap the hub but I don't know if he would manage to get the correct air gap.

    If not, I'll just sell the wheel and move on. I don't want to "have a go" and end up wrecking the wheel

    The wheel I have has been painted though ( I bought it that way)
