Both are to be had for similar money and there are some good finance deals too. If you had the choice what would you do? Go for an older but well proven design or go for the newer model?

Would it be too firm for touring on over a standard blade?

I'd wait a year or so & then pick up a mint 16 SP.....in fact I'm fully minded to be doing that

Not sure of the current deals but this time last year you could get a brand new standard non abs repsol for £10,300 (I know because I bought one ). An SP was going for in the region of £13k. If you could get it for that....then the 2016 would have my vote. If it's £15k or nothing I'd be looking at S1000RR or waiting until I could test ride new blade v new GSXR1000R. Interested to hear what you decide!

Does the standard 17 blade have bosch abs or is it the Honda c-abs ? ( I know the SP's have binned it not sure if the standard has ).
if they have binned the c-abs i'd have the 17 if they haven't go get the BMW, I wouldn't touch the 16 SP if its got c-abs its dangerous, and adds 11kgs.

Great point though if going for the SP. Make sure you get a non-ABS model

I've ridden my mates 16 plate SP.
    it's a bloody great bike.

    I wouldn't spend 15k + on a new bike.

I wouldn't get either. I'd go for the BMW too.
