Never had to do it - but always thought it would be useful to know. You see MotoGP and WSBK racers do it often. What is the process for bump starting and can you practice it without knackering your bike? I take it its: Clutch In Select 1st or 2nd Gear Push bike as fast as possible with clutch in......... then I don't really know the process from there- bump down on seat and let clutch out quickly????
I would go for second gear, you only need to be going 5-8 mph(very brisk walk/slow jog) Ideally a natural slope will help. Don't think "bumping"down on seat is really needed, but being in the seat when you dump the clutch is highly recommended.
Bumping down on the seat stops the rear wheel locking when you dump the clutch. Just watch the gas when she fires and be ready with the clutch........or you'll end up on yer arse.
Had to do this once on the blade. Was a right pain and was told afterwards that the slipper clutch doesnt help?
I've bump started heaps of bikes but for some reason the CBR is a real pain to get going. Maybe it does have something to do with the slipper clutch although a mate doesn't have any issues bumping his R1 with slipper.
Never been able to bump my 05 but saying that the battery was dead each time so the fuel pump wouldn't of been going
Modern Jump Start Power Packs are very small nowadays, better than dropping ya bike! http://www.halfords.com/workshop-to...chargers-jump-starters/ring-lithium-powerpack
I bumped mine several times last year when the battery was iffy...no problems, that was with some pushes & a few downhills
Not unrelated question (restart after storing) does firing the bike with the kill switch on prime the oil system, oil pressure ?
Not 100% but I'm sure if the kill switch is on the bike won't even crank, think it isolates starter as well. But can't see there being an issue after storing up, as long as you have the right amount of oil and a healthy engine
Thanks, I wasn't sure...just something I do with my old VWs..but they are flat tappet, crank splash lubrication etc. Still, same principle I guess. Good to know !
I have one of these at work just in case, used as few times and works perfectly. Bump starting is a pain, I have a pretty good gradient in the work garage, push it to the top and the blade will just about splutter to a start at the bottom. If you have a flat and its due to a duff stator, RR or battery bumping is gonna be really tough
Bumped my CBR600 a bunch of times. Tried to bump my 08 a few times (battery was knackered) and it almost killed me pushing it around in full gear. Always fun trying to shut the throttle/engage clutch once you've got it running to stop you getting dragged down the road.
