Seems like the insurance industry wants it all their own way. On one hand you can only earn NCB on a per vehicle but losses and points affect everything. With 22 years claim free in a car and never made a claim on a bike but have had a couple of breaks over 15 years of riding so I'm only on 2 years NCB. Would I be a safe bet as its ME that earns NCB not a vehicle just like it’s me that get points etc. I don’t think we should just accept "that’s just the way it is" approach off the insurance industry. That’s why the 50 / 50 settlements are becoming more common. Both parties pay their excess and loose NCB and both at fault. Win, win, win for insurance companies. Personally I think they are all crooks just that some operate in a smoother or smarter way than others.
I have had issues with insurance also. If you consider a modification as something to enhance performance, such as exhaust, power commander, braided lines etc, I only have 5 mods. Unfortunately EVERY insurer I have tried also considers aesthetic non-OEM pieces as mods, including rear sets, screen, heated grips, comfort seat, R&G crash protection, engine cases etc. As such I would have to declare 21 'modifications' in their eyes, but herein lies the problem: most insurers will only allow a maximum of 5 or 6 mods before they simply won't cover the bike. I have previously even submitted a list of all my mods and been told they were covered. Upon closer inspection it turned out that they were only covering the first five on the list. If I owned a panigale or something similar I doubt I'd change more than 2 things, but I always change loads on my Hondas and all this time I've not had FULL modification cover, without my knowledge. If your insurer tells you that you're fully covered for mods and you have more than 5, I'd call them and check because I must have spoken to 8 different insurers now and they all draw the line at 5-6 mods. Martin
Bennetts actually state they cover 16 modifications automatically as part of any bike policy. Both Bennetts and BikeSure don't have any issues with number of modifications although I'm finding lots of insurers draw the line at a few ... none of them will quote online either.
The things they class as mods are bar ends and tail tidy, brake lines as soon as you put the proper things like cans brakes pc's the policy goes up a fair bit
