Just been out for a ride and got back to see oil on the engine casing and frame. Can't be certain as to source but it seems to be concentrated near the top of the case where that black wire goes in. Doesn't (or hasn't to date) leaked whilst standing in garage and is the first time I've seen this after a ride. The only thing that has happened recently is that it went into Abingdon Honda for a 12,000 routine service - possibly just coincidence. Any ideas? What is that black cable? On closer inspection - as you can see in the photo, it looks as if someone has put insulating tape around the wire. The oil was all over the insulating tape and the white spongy material that the cable feeds through into the engine..
That's you stator pal. The insulation tape is not great, I wonder how someone has managed to damage it?
OK, cheers. Looks as if the 'white spongy stuff' is where a rubber grommet should be - this could be pointing at a bodged stator repair job...

Many thanks Sulaco - good idea - if the stator has been damaged due to a poorly rectifier, makes sense to replace both at same time. Looks pretty good value as a set. When rectifier and regulator are mentioned separately, are people referring to the same component or are these separate components? Cheers.
..so I just enquired what my local Honda dealer would charge, wait for it, deep breath - "The complete generator kit you are requesting is available, Fitted cost would be £495.54" Wowsers! Interesting that Honda's approach is a complete generator replacement. Either way, I think I'll have a go at it myself with a relatively simple stator + rectifier replacement. It was a warranty item, but claims only valid for 7yrs from date of manufacture which seems reasonable.
Do some research mate on the quality of what you are buying, if it looks cheap then it probably is. You don't have to pay OEM money, but you don't want to do it twice either. Nothing worse than buying cheap poor quality Chinese made units with substandard copper windings, which is where nearly all the cheap ones are from. Normal course of events is that the reg/rec trashes the battery, and then the genny and quite often the wring as well at that point. Common mod is to bypass the OEM wiring and take the ground on the RR direct to the battery, that normally resolves 90% of the original cause of failure. You can also do that with the +ve side and an inline 30A fuse, but normally the ground is where all your troubles start and end. Cant remember from my RR6 if the RR is a MOSFET or not, don't think it was, but stand to be corrected if it was OEM, might be worth looking at if you are thinking of keeping the bike for any length of time.
I'm no motor electrician, but I did buy one from China originally (£22 inc shipping)and sent it back the day it arrived( it was shite, I knew it would be, but I had to check) the set I got was from Germany maybe not up to OEM quality but It looked far superior to the one from China, It could have possibly been made in china still but to a better spec I guess . Mine's been in quite a while now, no problems to report and I buy another if I had to.
..cheers Kentblade - I've gone for this one from www.mtp-racing.de - no idea as to quality. What I did like in particular is that it comes with a gasket avoiding the need to use paste. Connecting through to the battery direct I guess works if the wired-ground isn't all that good? I'm no electrician and this is all a bit of wild stab in the dark. Apart from the fact it looks similar, I've got nothing else to go on. I think that MTP-Racing source this from China - I've seen a post on here (http://www.gixxer.com/forums/41-ratings/639489-replacement-stator-http-www-mtp-racing-de.html) that says he bought one from China and then from MTP-Racing and both looked exactly the same! At least MTP-Racing appear to have decent customer service. The kit includes the stator, rectifier and gasket for £127.
