When I get a chance I will post a better picture of what's in the box! Fecking amazed on how over engineered all the brackets are! I even had to make a new engine spacer for the left side as the original spacer had a welded part coming off the back to hold more shit on!! .....
I was more worried about the 2016 bikes now that compulsory ABS is fittted and therefore wondered if that would make it I legal to take off? Anyway they reckon the new R1 is quite a good system, so will see how It feels before deciding to get rid or not, but I do understand you Honda guys dumping their ABS, after all the horror stories
I'm coming in on the tail end of all this but has anyone taken this up with the DOT as regards an unsafe system with a view to an official recall/modification? With so much documented evidence of problems on various forums and the horror stories of levers coming back to the bars at the wrong moment it strikes me that if this was to happen to a car system there would be some action taken.
Thanks for that. Ian E. I've been through that and just wanted people to know the form for detailing the defect is; forms.vosa.gov/Vsdr/create If you don't tell'em they won't know.
In all fairness my ABS worked flawlessly, it was a late 2014 model, I had no dramas or issues! I think in 5000 miles I only had 2 moments when filtering when my lever came back a little further than normal! .... So you might ask why I removed it all??? Well I wanted to upgrade the calipers all round including the rear, but it's a pointless excercise as the whole system is pretty mush governed by the pumps! I'm also on a massive diet program so it made sense! Improve the brakes and ditch 11kg! Not to mention I can now work on the system myself with no brake bleeding issues! It was a no brainier for me....
Done mate, the only problem with that was that the VOSA inspector only got to test a Honda UK supplied bike.......................it seems it would have made a lot more sense to test a bike from one of a number of people who raised defect forms.....so that's another toothless institution IMO. The bottom line was that Honda supplied a truckload of design diagrams that stated the brakes could not fail, so that ticked that official box I guess. In fairness to the bloke at VOSA off the record comments were made that I will not repeat here (other than to say it finally made my mind up to trade the pile of sh*te), and he was not a happy bunny, but it appeared his arms were tied behind his back on this one.
Ok guys, I've read all the threads now so come spring and a ride out it happens to me, there'll be a very cheap 2 owner, low mileage Repsol CBR for sale!! First I have to survive the incident? Thanks for the replies.
I've finally had enough of the abs system 2 more low speed brake failures today in quick succession. Ruined the rest of the day for me as paranoia sets it when you pick the speed & harder braking up Going to get a quote from local Honda on cost of ripping it out for me as the bleed will be £300+ Anyone know @Dave dunlop @ColinBR if it affects your insurance as it shows as an abs & I'll have to tell them on renewal it's standard & no doubt they may try to bum me with higher premium
Hmm well my renewal is due soon so I'll ask the hypothetical question & see what they say & report back
Okay so I went to Honda & they won't take the system out for me or disconnect it either!!! So I've had to opt for another expensive bleed as I can't afford for it to playing up when I'm over at the tt in a few weeks Just trying not to think of how many beers & pasties 300 quid would have bought
They are no doubt concerned about any possible claims for injury should they do it and then you crash. I can understand that. Guess your are left with either doing it yourself or selling the bike and getting either a non abs or new blade with better abs abs system.
Yes there is that, but I think some of it is because they won't admit there is a problem with it too. Selling the bike isn't really an option at the moment as I'd take too big a hit on it with the high mileage & tbh I've got it modded how I like & I love the bike....just not the problems with the abs. So the plan is if this bleed cures it for a while, to keep it 2 more years then get shut for one of the last non abs ones. I've been told the new blade has still got quite a lengthy abs bleed procedure so unless you can do it yourself it looks like an expensive service interval again!
I've done mine and a few others have done theirs so depending on where you are in the country I'm sure one of us that has done it can help you. You just have to bare in mind re sale value of the abs is removed. Some might not like it. Removes a lot of weight though and you will need new braided lines fitting. Took me about 4 hrs when I did mine. I have no idea if it can be simply disconnected though and left as is. You have to alter the loom when you remove it all.
Why not just pull the fuse? Free quick, easy and reversible. Though not he full monty removal, disabling the fuse will stop the ABS from failure. Unfortunately bleeds are a mix bag of success. The money you put toward on that is better off spend on full removal.
